SFX magazine and CultBoxTV have published the new official Being Human Series 5 Synopsis! Quote: “Hal, Tom and Alex are three housemates with some serious issues on their hands, and they’re not all about the washing up rota. Hal is a 500 year-old vampire, Tom is a hardened werewolf and Alex has recently had the misfortune of becoming a ghost. Strapped to a chair in the living room, Hal is finding it tough going cold-turkey – mostly because the mess Tom has made is really bothering him. Spoiler But when Tom and Alex release Hal, they’re not to know it’s far too soon to be letting a blood-thirsty vampire onto the streets… When Hal recruits Crumb as a vampire and welcomes him to the supernatural world, the meek becomes mighty and we see what happens when a bullied man finds his bite. oh good is this a safe place to vent, cuz I'm not enjoying this synopsis!!! I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but I want a place to talk about it.

Spoiler: my thought is it that part could have happened in the past.....flashbacks....and they are throwing it in as a twist to confuse us.

ok, here's my thought:

I've reread that part half a dozen times already and I'm TOTALLY convinced this is flashback material. of course I could be spoiled and confused by all the fanfic I've been reading. confuse

but "When Hal recruits Crumb as a vampire and welcomes him to the supernatural world, the meek becomes mighty...." totally sounds like the transformation of Hal into "Lord Harry" for the first time. His first recruit and the power that suddenly gives him over another.

"....and we see what happens when a bullied man finds his bite." I'm being influenced by Ruby's "Numb" fanfic on this one, but I think Hal had been a victim as a human and that probably continued into his first years of vampire life, and that eventually he "found his bite" after his first recruit(s) and became the ruthless Lord Harry.

that's my theory and I'm sticking to it! Hal has fought so hard for 55 yrs, and it's obvious at and of S4 he's still good Hal, even after the couple of shots of blood. he hasn't killed anyone, and he has become friends with Tom. And then he detox's and gets an upstanding job. It's hard for me to believe then he'd go all bad again!

I was quite shocked by this synopsis yesterday, as much by the amount of spoilerish info so early on, as by the content itself. At this stage, an official release without the highlighted spoiler part above would have been sufficient

According to SFX, this is a Press release from BBC Worldwide/2entertain, but it is not publicly available which does beg the question if this should have been published yet, especially as it is for the DVD and we don't even have an officially announced air date yet! If so, they need to co-ordinate better!

On to the spoiler itself.. when we all shared our hopes and fears for Hal in series 5 some of us said

we wanted to see Hal have some fang action and for me personally I embrace the idea of as much of a tumultuous journey for Hal as possible, with as many challenges put in his path as possible and all dimensions of his being being explored, good and bad, all shades in between including in present day.

I want that giddy bliss of evil, I want to see the monster he can truly be unleashed I want to be shocked and frightened for Hal, biting my fingernails, be utterly overwhelmed..and I am not even sure i want the ends tied up all neatly in the end... but i guess given the choice... to see him ultimately overcome.

So thinking about it, this scenario given in the synopsis in present day would actually be epic - BUT I wish I did not know it in advance! it dilutes the power of the discovery!

I agree totally, domino. I'm so excited about the new series that I can't restrain myself and will just read/watch anything about it that I can lay my hands on. On the other hand I really don't want to know.

Seeing as I do know.....

I've mentioned elsewhere on the forum that I want Hal to stay good. Don't get me wrong.....I really want the full works. I really, really want to see a no fangs barred (or all fangs bared?) Hal, but if that were to happen in the present day then I think the series would suffer as as result (as with Mitchell). The odd 'blip' or two, on the other hand keep the story and the character alive. Where can 'good Hal' go if there's no 'bad Hal' to counterpoint him?

I will resist the urge to write a full dissertation on the subject, but for me Hal is simply the most fascinating, engaging, compelling character that has ever existed on film. He combines every personality facet you can imagine, in one totally believable (and rather appealing) package. And for that to be maintained, it's kind of neccessary for him to fall off the wagon now and again. So this synopisis does not disappoint in any way....oh no....far from it. I JUST REALLY DON'T WANT TO KNOW YET!

I could go on....and on....and on.....and I've had to edit this quite heavily to prevent it from being a blog. Once the series actually starts, I might not be able to help myself!

the beauty of the forum is there is no limit to the length of comments fifi so you go for it! girl I for one am prone to the odd ramble and interested in hearing your uncensored thoughts!

Could agree more with your comment... the reason Hal is so compelling (apart from the way Damien delivers each line with captivatiing nuance) is

Spoiler: because of the tension in his every waking moment between his will and his nature...although that in itself is a complex multilayered gorgeous thingumybob. If he goes off the rails in present time let's face it it is going to be delicious, tortuous, heartbreaking to watch ...great drama, great story telling and we get to see Damien really let go into the depth of this character! and to see him turn someone... wowzal... I am imagining hi remorse right now..and the trying to pick up the pieces..and we don't know the circumstances of the turning...what if he was trying to 'save' someone...

OK.....so here's a bit of a ramble!

One of the things that I find fascinating about s4 is that at no point did we actually see Hal kill anyone . The only time that he came close was in the pawn shop at the end of ep2. He even managed to 'fall off the wagon' without directly causing any bloodshed (just tangentially).

We only have a few facts about Hal's early 'life' and the 1855 flashback is the first glimpse into his character. Although at this point there is a calm stillness about him, his appearance suggests that this is due to all of his appetites being sated. Fergus does not kill the servant even though he wants to....he saves her for Lord Harry. I seems that for this Hal the kill is more important than the blood. It suggests frenzy.

This contrasts so sharply with the Hal of 1950. He is totally in control. It is difficult to imagine this calm, quiet, immaculate, sharp suited Hal wandering around half naked and covered in blood (although do feel free to try!). He drinks blood from a wine glass - although I'm not sure that at any point we actually see him do so - and tells Cutler that it's a good job Fergus was around to 'finish the job'. He is arranging 'dog fights', he is cold, cruel and sadistic, but there is no suggestion of frenzy now.

Both the slaughter of 1855, and the killing of Cutler in 1950 happen off screen.......just sayin'!

The Hal who arrived at Hololulu Heights was a version of 1950 Hal; immaculate, quiet, apparently in control. The 'man of god' speech is so totally self assured and even at that moment when he decides to surrender to his urges and kill the pawn shop man, he makes him do a count down......there is no uncontrolled frenzy. It is not until Leo and Pearl go that this begins to fragment.

So where does that leave us in S5? Are we going to see frenzy? Are we going to see anything at all? And why on earth would Hal turn someone?

Questions, questions, questions (maybe this isn't so spoilery after all!) and I'm not going to answer any of them now. But I may well be back......

so now that set stalker Su shared a picture of this "Crumb", it looks contemporary. hmmm.... that thought about him turning someone to save them crossed my mind. not sure if that would have an impact at all though. well maybe so. Like fifi said, he hasn't actually killed anyone in say the 55 yrs he's been "off blood". he looked like he had it all together with Pearl and Leo and all his OCD tasks, but as you said once they left him, he cracked. And he's really been that way since. one of the fabulous things about Damien's performance - that man was made for this role - is that he always exhudes coiled up tension, panic, fear, uncertainly, grief, pent up and tampered down rage and violence. Except perhaps in the funny parts of Graveyard Shift. However, even when he was blood drunk he didn't kill Alex, he didn't kill Eve. He looked like he just might, but although was drunk/stoned, which lowered his inhibitions, he still had control. And even after drinking Alex's blood, he seems purposeful and not frenzied, he still seems like "good Hal". Then he voluntarily (except for being ambushed) submits himself to detox. So for me, I still have a hard time believing that he will suddenly revert, that bad Hal will come to stay. And the spoilers don't show that, he lets himself get slobbered with evil banana mush and all he's worried about is the mess, gets the manager job (after a banana food fight no less), and the scooby do gang pic. and I find it hard to believe that he'll seesaw back and forth like Mitchell did either. Doens't fit Hal's personality. When he decides to go down a path, he commits! He's all or nothing, that's why I think he says it goes in cycles and it gets worse each time. So where does Crumb's recruitment and this "meek becomes mighty" come in?! At first I interpreted it that Hal is the meek and he becomes as....I'm thinking more Henry Yorke than Lord Harry. But maybe Crumb is the meek one and he's the one that goes bad, then Hal his merry band have to do something about it? No that doesn't fit cuz Captn is the big baddie this time, so I'm sure he is the one we have to worry about with the bloody handprint....

Ok, that really wasn't much beyond a ramble.

So of all the pics available it seems we will be getting some flashbacks. But does anyone think that the "we are at war" scene is a flashback or present time. Maybe flashback but still 19th or 20th century? (I was really hoping we'd get a really early Hal flashback, with a horse and a red shield but that doesn't seem likely *sigh*)

I think my neighbours must have wondered what on earth was going on in my house when I read *that* bit of the synopsis. I may have squeed and jumped around the living room a bit, I'm not sure, it's all a bit of a blur.

As with all things Being Human, I don't think this is going to be as simple as it seems. If Hal had gone off the rails enough to actually give in a drink blood after being in "the chair", I think he would have properly gone for it. Lock up your daughters, half of South Wales dead, streets running with blood etc etc. And yet he recruits someone. When you think about it, there's quite a few reasons he might do this. But I think the clue is in the rest of the text "when a bullied man finds his bite". Perhaps Hal is trying to save him from something, who knows (well actually probably Su!), we'll find out when it airs.

I'd be tempted to say that whatever his motives, he's been a very naughty vampire in recruiting Crumb, but that might not be quite true either. Needless to say, it's probably not going to turn out to be his best idea ever. Does he keep it a secret from the others? Never a good idea, but potentially a good plot.

What I'm most excited about is that with all of this, as well as the new job, I think we might be in store for something we haven't really seen much of. Hal is so many different people throughout series 4, and I can see that continuing. We always say good and bad Hal, but wouldn't it be good if the Hal of 2013 was just as grey as Mr Rook? Not bad, certainly not that (please oh please Lord Toby, not that!) but not quite "good" either? A little looser, a little more capable, and similar to the bar scene with Alex, a little sexier. Not that I'm sure I could take that.

One thing's for sure. No matter how much I love bad Hal, I want him to keep winning in the present day, and with so much history to explore, I don't think there's a need to proceed on to the dark days of a mitchell-esque struggle for Hal. But then I love a good underdog, and bad Hal is certainly not that!

Anyway, I didn't really mean to write that much about it, so I'll stop rambling on now! 20th Jan is my bet (and hope!). And please, please, let's get a confirmed date and a trailer soon. I know I'm English and I'm supposed to be very good at queuing and being patient, but I really can't wait! Roll on Series 5! x

If it's not Feb 3 then it'll be sometime this month (!!!!), so Den of Geek saying January is just a bit of shorthand. I cant get my head around this air date thing....how strange that they would release a DVD date if its wrong?!

My only other thought is that the release date for the DVD is right and they may play 2 episodes per week if it airs in february? I really hope that is not the case or it will feel an awful lot like they are rushing it out the way :( x

I am veering towards your approach Ciara - it's ready when it's ready! savouring this sweet suspense and the expectancy is becoming more delicious actually. Sorry I meant to make that sound less foreplayesque!

Back to the synpopsis, it is very Hal-centrique is it not? Will Hal will be the central focus I wonder (not just to us Damiacs) but in the show?

it must be something to do with suits .. Hal seems to get very masterful in suits...

I am not sure if this is what you are driving at fifi, but

Spoiler: it has planted the possibility of the thought in my mind that manager Hal is in bad Hal mode - in the flashbacks we saw he always looked very comfortable in his own skin when he was bad Hal and utterly tormented when he was on the wagon in present day. I do find it hard to believe that Hal would be all the way over, it is implied his appetites are so destructive when indulged so how would he come back from that..and it seems to me that what is so unique and magnetic about Hal is the way he walks that knife edge..as much as it would be a giddy release in some ways for us if he let go into that, the tension of him keeping away from it is what is so compelling.
For me, 'seeing Damien at his best' means seeing that multilayerdness, which is far more complex than simply becoming the monster he truly is.

Oh and....I am not sure i want to read any more spoilers at all, what will be left for us to be surprised by?!
