TRAVELLING LIGHT

National Theatre on Tour

A new play by Nicholas Wright, starring Antony Sher

How had a twenty-two year-old pretentious layabout made a discovery that would elude every other cinematic pioneer for years to come? In a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber-merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl – now a famed American film director – looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams.

Following Vincent in Brixton and The Reporter, Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age.

The award-winning Antony Sher – whose previous work with the National Theatre includes Primo and Stanley – will play the role of Jacob.

Post-show Talk: Wednesday 4 April

Whoop! I am so happy for you Eileen, you are coming over from Germany to see it especially? Not so long now!

I am sooo hoping to go in May to, but have this growing sinking feeling I won't manage the journey  - without boring you too much with my tragic tale, I am recovering from a neurological illness and after being bed bound for far too long to mention I am only just managing a small bit of time in a wheelchair, BUT I am improving...maybe not quickly enough though! :/ Damien Molony and the National Theatre take note, a private perfomance may be my only way to see Travelling Light!

In the meantime, I love hearing about other people's trips to the theatre to see the play and meeting Damen! smile

I'm sorry to hear that. *hugs* I hope you will be able to make the journey. I read somewhere that at the end of April they will do some filming during the play. I guess that the play may be available on DVD or just as a video or maybe on TV later on? I really really hope you will be able to see him.

aw, thanks...and that would be an amazing second best alternative Eileen!

Travelling Light has already been broadcast at cinemas as part of  "National Theatre Live" on 9 February, where th play was transmitted live.  But I only found out about it after the event! please do it again NT!!!! I guess as a live experience, a standard film would be quite a big artistic compromise. A film of a filmmaker making film does have, in my opinion, an artistic appeal though!

Not to worry, I have no doubt that Damien has a long and successful career ahead of him, so there will be plenty more opportunites i am sure! smile i

In the meantime, I will continue to support him as an actor in my own little way.

has anyone out there seenTravelling Light? what did you think?
