Thank you so much Su, and __Nic__for sharing.. this is a huge treat !
It must have been so A-M-A-Z-I-N-G to see Damien reading this live and the whole performance is outstanding Impressive accent, wonderful story, compelling.
I was enthralled by this story and zombie stories aren't usually my 'thing' but this was well written and interesting and Damien's performance in reading out just added that something to it. The music in the background was slightly distracting at times but i did enjoy it very much and thank you to Nic for sharing it with us :)
Ever since seeing Damien play 'bad Hal', I have had a vision of him in a Dick Tracy film but had only got as far as the costume..now I can hear the voice too! The american accent makes total sense too considering the author is LA born, he must write in a american, not english dialogue!
If anyone is interested in reading more from the writer Charles Yu, ‘First Person Shooter’ is from a collection of short stories ‘Sorry Please Thank You: Stories’.
Book description via Amazon:
The author of the widely praised debut novel How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe returns with a hilarious, heartbreaking, and utterly original collection of short stories. A big-box store employee is confronted by a zombie during the graveyard shift, a problem that pales in comparison to his inability to ask a coworker out on a date . . . A fighter leads his band of virtual warriors, thieves, and wizards across a deadly computer-generated landscape, but does he have what it takes to be a hero? . . . A company outsources grief for profit, its slogan: “Don’t feel like having a bad day? Let someone else have it for you.” Drawing from both pop culture and science, Charles Yu is a brilliant observer of contemporary society, and in Sorry Please Thank You he fills his stories with equal parts laugh-out-loud humor and piercing insight into the human condition. He has already garnered comparisons to such masters as Kurt Vonnegut and Douglas Adams, and in this new collection we have resounding proof that he has arrived (via a wormhole in space-time) as a major new voice in American fiction.
You can buy ar copy HERE (no I am not on commission, it just feels right to promote and support the work of the author we have enjoyed via Damien! )
I noticed that too Lisa, hard to tell if that was being amplified by the recording, or if that background noise really was that loud. If that were me having to perform after a probably sleepless night in a tent, up to my knees in mud, I would have had a Hal style prima donna wobbly "I simply cannot be expected to perform under these conditions, really I can't!"
Yeah the background music is really distracting... Anyway, I really liked it, Damien's American accent is very good! I laughed when he said 'a zahmbie' lol. It must be so hard to read, act and do a fake accent all at the same time! Well done Damien :)

Wow! That was an incredible performance! I only wish I could have seen it live! He did a very wonderful job at the accent! But I was kinda sad to not get here even a little bit of his real accent. I really hope he does more things like this! It's really awesome!

It's a really nice look you've got going on there
@Laura any voice acting role for Damien would be a treat wouldn't it? in one way a shame to miss out on a visual performance, because Damien is such a mesmerizing actor to watch and conveys so much silently, but a joy to discover his reading talents too and he is so amazing with accents, any readings and recording would be marvelous! but I guess nothing can replace that frissant, htat electricity of a live performance and that exchange of energies between actor and audience!
@Sami, am I far off with the dick Tracy /chicago allusion for the accent? it is a really broad sound isn't it!
That was amazing! He didn't break accent even once He makes my try of an American accent sound so bad xD
He wasn't just reading, he was being the character I would have fell to the floor if I were there (The Whoosh at the end was me falling to the floor)Looks as though he had fun doing this!
He has this wonderful blend of styles and unique language, some of it, though not the story read by Damien, reminds me a little bit of 'A clockwork Orange' (no idea why and probably only in my strange head). But I would recommend it, thanks to Damien for introducing him to us!
If you are after a longer read UJ, CHarles Yu's debut novel 'How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe' is also higly recommended (mine is on order!) I wonder if Damien is a fan of his work?
I finally remembered and clicked myself over to amazon. Yu looks a total hoot. I've got Sorry on my kindle now but probably wont get to it til next month. I noticed his other work but I'll see how I go with Sorry first.
