So, just got home & listened to this (thank the Lord for sky +).
Quite a good little story, brought back memories of sleeping on economics books!

Loved the accent, definitely a thicker Irish than I recall ever hearing from him but swoon worthy nonetheless.

Might just go listen to it again......

I wish they still showed Jackanory, he'd be absolutely perfect!

Or failing that, the CBeebies bedtime story section, I recorded and watched the Lee Ingleby week and i know Richard Armitage also did a week. Damien would be wonderful at it, he has the right kind of voice, filled with character.

I wondered at how thick his accent was and just put it down to being written by an Irish author and being set in Ireland. It was utterly charming nevertheless.

I loved it. The accent did sound stronger than I remember. I think it sounded like a Northern Irish accent. I imagine him standing up in the studio acting out the play and the different characters.

I' m rather surprised that Damien has not tweeted about it at all. He always tweeted just before Being Human started and gave Travelling Light several plugs.

It was produced by BBC Radio in Belfast, maybe accounted for the stronger accent? I agree with you Laura and wonder why Damien did not mention it, perhaps he thinks we are doing a good job of promoting his work! But he has many more followers on twitter who may like to know about his projects. It cannot come naturally though to promote yourself? perhaps he is more at ease self advertising when there is a multi cast?

I'm really, really pleased that it's come up on youtube......when I played it this morning (!) from iplayer I was acutely aware that it said '6 days left'.  But presumabley hits on iplayer are recorded by the bbc?  If so, then listen on iplayer while it's available and maybe we'll get more radio Damien

We need a bit of info about 'Hill Bachelors' now!

Cute story, very nice. I'm increasingly surprised and impressed by shorts, even though they're still no competition to a story the 'proper' length. Anyway, I cracked up too when he found the most depressing stories ever. And beautifully read, of course, by that nice young man.

 I don't think it was a Northern Irish accent. Jimmy Nesbitt has a Northern Irish accent and it's very noticeably different to a Southern Irish/Dublin accent (harder in comparison if you see what i mean) and Damien's didn't sound like Jimmy's. I think it was his usual accent, just heavier.

Only 4 days left to listen to Damien reading 'Student Stories' on the BBC Iplayer everyone, and as fifi said earlier, listening via that medium in the first instance is a good idea, to register listening interest!

with 5 proper listens and 3 interrupted ones, I'm firmly in B.

The first time I felt a little bit like this: somehowdrunk on his fabulous voice.  I even took an appropriate line and put it in my siggy! You know, it has been acknowledged that the Irish accent is the sexiest accent in the world. ooohbaby

 

Just when I think my brain has finally processed the actual story, I find something I missed.  psychadelic happy cows didn't register till listen #3.  I finally figured out what a Carrel was (hey this close to Christmas) by listen #4.  the fact that it is a cherry tree I finally heard on listen #5 (but I knew I wanted to find a branch to perch on from the very first listen wink)

it's clear I'm so not down with the kidz (peter gabriel, yes; jesse j, who?) 

domino, I'm with you - my absolute favorite part is the 3 grim plays.  That whole bit is Hilarious! (Hal-arious?)

"so here we have a man, possibly stuck in an urn, also staring a worm, huh, why not?!" LMAO

I love how Damien's voice caresses the word "drama".

The way Damien reads, you can just picture him getting into the moment, animatedly gesticulating, acting out all the facial expressions.  He really would be lovely to listen to in audio books!

I finally had a moment to myself to listen to this, a whole 15 minutes of pure Damo!!! He has awesome voice for radio, shame to miss out on the whole package but he does have a way of pulling u into a story with that voice!!! Will he be doing more? I hope so !!!

I usually listen to 6Music at work.....but realised today that I could listen to this instead.  I couldn't get it on iplayer, unfortunately, so I listened on youtube........a few times.  People kept coming in and saying 'oh, are you listening to radio 4?'.  And I don't think that anyone really noticed that I was listening to the same thing basically all day! 

So I think I'm very firmly in c) (although I wasn't counting!)

Lol! that's the way to work fifi! Even Hal may be impressed in an Escheresque universe kind of a way. I can identify fifi, my Kindle HD Fire is simply playing this on a loop, interspersed with Being Human series 4 episode 2 which is also on the iplayer right now

I finally got around to listening to this today and it's such a sweet and funny story - he "lived" it for me.

Gorgeous voice again, could listen to it all day...
