I know we have already seen his character profile, but it is such a thrill to see Damien on the BBC One official Ripper Street website!

Have you noticed that Albert Flight is 'Detective Sergeant' but Drake is just plain 'Sergeant'. I wonder if that's a typo or they are of different ranks?

Well IMDB is still screwed up, has Detective Constable Albert Flight.  But they list Drake as Detective Sergeant.  And should Reid be Detective Inspector?  Maybe they are just being inconsistent.

Or I wonder if education comes into play?  Drake grew up on the streets and is for the most part Reid's henchman, so to speak.  Flight looks very posh.  If he had more education, could he be at a higher level than Drake?

I think perhaps it's just wording. I think Reid's official title is 'Detective Inspector' so it would make sense that Drake is 'Detective Sergeant' same as Flight seems to be. I find it interesting that he's of equal rank to Drake, whether he's been a DS for long or it's a recent promotion remains to be seen but i think his youthful look may suggest one thing when in reality the opposite is true (supposition of course, he may indeed be a rookie)

I wondered whether it was something to do with how you came to be a Detective. I'm sure that there was a specific Detective Squad in the Met in the mid 1800's rather than it being split into the local divisions, so maybe you still had to spend time there - train as such - to get the title Detective...?

The Detective Constable / Detective Sergeant plot thickens...

Official BBC America press release = Detective Constable Albert Flight
BBC Media Centre AND BBC Ripper Street website character profile = Detective Sergeant Albert Flight

Damien's Spotlight profile used to say just 'Detective' now it reads 'Det. Const.'....

Well (your honour!).....considering the above - and that the synopsis for ep 2 says:

"Chief Inspector Abberline arrives with reinforcements for H-Division in the form of Detective Constable Albert Flight, a young Irishman of great ambition."

I feel pretty confident that he is just that.

I do think it's odd that the character profile says Detective Sergeant - if it's a mistake, then it's a pretty massive one!  It's also odd (although not strictly inaccurate....) that on the BBC Ripper St page Reid is listed as plain Inspector, and Drake as Sergeant, despite what the official character profiles say - so maybe they just don't think it's that important to be precise!

However the phrase "...of great ambition" just keeps nagging at me......and we know what he's wearing in ep2 - it doesn't look as posh as the blue suit in the Ripper St profile pic.....so maybe he is Detective Sergeant by the end of the series...or maybe he is all along, but is undercover as a constable - lol!

But why bother changing his Spotlight Page? - 'Detective' seem accurate to me, whatever the rank.

Anyway.....I love that there is already some ambivalence about his character, even though it hasn't even started yet!

I think Police Constables and i think, Police Sergeants who are mostly in uniform and it's the Detective branches that aren't, ie Detective Constable (Flight) and Detective Sergeant (Drake) and Detective Inspector (Reid). Perhaps those without the 'detective' in their title are the uniformed officers?

You are right, Ruby. My brother in law was a PC (Police Constable) in the Metropolitan Police and at one time Acting Sergeant. He remained a PC all his working life! Only those in plain clothes were "detective". Remember The Bill? It is all explained there.

indeed Ruby and Pearl!
the mystery of Flight being 'Detective Constable' in some descriptions and 'Detective Sergeant' in others still remains (and I quite like that!)

Keeping an open mind that this could mean all sorts of things, but...this tweet from actor Glenn Speers suggests Damien may be in Ripper Street!

It's almost 6 months since this tweet appeared...... 6 months of excitement, speculation and impatience.  If it wasn't for this tweet (and the one with the picture) from Glenn Speers, I wonder how long it would've been before we'd known about this.

And now it's here (almost).  Only one more week until we see this very ep.....and we're still excited (a little!), we're still speculating.....and still impatient!!!!

Perhaps reading too much into this and would not want to make incorrect assertions about what Tiger Aspect meant here, but to me, this sounds like Damien is Detective Flight for the duration! (next series anyone?)

I am rubbish at attaching pictures from Twitter - are you guys screengrabbing or something - but there was a nice cast picture posted earlier from someone (can't remember whom) that was retweeted by Ripper Street, with Damien on the end...

This article from whatculture seems to have attracted quite a lot of attention on twitter....so I thought I'd post it here (it's about Flight, not Damien...so I didn't think it should go in the press section).

http://whatculture.com/tv/ripper-street-constable-flight-worst-policeman-ever.php

Have to say that I largely agree with what this article says.  Previously he's been described as cocky - which implies a certain....swagger, but to me he just seemed rather pompous and full of himself.  Despite telling Reid that it was an honour, his face said something different; and, on their very first meeting, he blew smoke in Jackson's face.  He then, more or less, accuses Drake of being a coward...and, despite his own lack of experience strides onto a situation that he is unable to handle.  The glimpsed expression on his face when he was up against the wall, about to be hit, was absolutely classic!!  And then there's the irony of his assertion that he cannot rest, because villany doesn't, when he then goes on to (fatally) fall asleep whilst on duty......

None of this means that I don't like him as a character.....far from it!  It probably makes him all the more appealing - the fact that, despite his reluctance to defend himself in the dosshouse, he faces the mob in defense of Merrick shows him in a very good light - he has a good heart.  If he was just an all round good, sweet guy - like Hobbs was - then I think I'd probably be a bit bored of him already......there's only so many times you can say 'awww' about a character!

Last week was the first appearance of a new character....there is still a long way to go in the series - and I'm really optimistic that the character of DC Flight has quite a journey ahead.  I stongly suspect that the final comment of this article is designed to provoke a response.....and it does seem to have achieved that!!

I pretty much agree with you there Fifi. I like the fact that he's turned up and he believes he's Abberline's "great hope" and then goes on to be pretty useless at everything that isn't done behind a desk! I think that Drake and Jackson not trusting him is good and gives the character somewhere to move towards, plus there's the hope that Flight's experience will help him in the long run - Hobbs would always have been the man they took under their wing to learn the ropes whereas Flight has already learned the basics and wants to move up in the world.

I do kinda agree that he is a bit of a rubbish policeman, from the viewpoint of the woman writing the article, but it seems a strange topic to have picked on to write an article about at all; especially after fewer than 10 minutes on screen and six episodes in the run left...I think she'll have egg on her face by the end of the series.

this article entered my consciousness this morning and I pretty quickly shoved it out again because it seems to me to be deliberately reactionary, it is one thing to talk about character traits, it is another to imply the character is somehow mediocre or worse and by inference unwanted. Shine is the WORSE policeman but he is a rivetting character, Flight is an ambiguous character who has shown shades of darkness and light - this is more interesting to me than a one dimensional simplistic character.

There is also a discussion on  Flight's character in the episode he was introduced to us here

I thought it was an unfair article. Her opinion is based on one episode. And the line about him spending the night out fighting crime really riled with me because he spent the night trying to locate John Goode.

He wasn't the worse policeman ever per se, he's a young policeman, on his first secondment out of uniform and eager to impress his new boss and colleagues with a bit of initiative and intelligence. The team aren't used to him and his ways and vice versa. He asked to be seconded at Whitechapel, he has ideas about policing without having any real experience of the streets of Whitechapel. He's young, he's naive and he has the arrogance of his youth. Hardly the worst policeman ever. He didn't deserve that. And then she went and compared him to Hobbs. He isn't and has never been and doesn't intend to be, i think the viewers would quickly complain if he was.

Shine is the worst one but as you say Domino, he's utterly rivetting to watch. The author of the article needs to watch more than one episode before passing judgement. Unless said article was just a pithy opinion based on that single episode, as in a 'oh well he's not going to be very good is he?' throwaway manner. We'll see.

American fans!

BBC America has begun it's promo for Ripper Street 2, which airs on 22 Feb, including the character profule for Damien's character.
confusingly they are still calling him Detective Sergeant, which we now know is simply not correct!

Character Profile - Detective Sergeant Albert Flight | BBC America

Detective Sergeant Albert Flight

Damien Molony

As an Irishman in the Metropolitan police, Flight is already marked as an outsider.

Securing Reid’s trust and respect is an even harder task as Reid sees in him only a reminder of the violent and tragic loss of PC Dick Hobbs.

But Flight is to prove himself not only worthy of Reid’s respect, but also unworthy of the kind of innocence that drew his affection to Hobbs. Flight is a man of secrets that the men of H Division could never guess.

About Damien Molony

Damien is most known for his role as Hal in the British TV Series "Being Human."
