JACK CHAT
Suspects Series 2 Episode 4 | Scene Breakdown
Scene 1 ( 00.00 - 00.49 )
News report voice over with flashbacks to the last episode, including Jack interviewing the Schaffers and his finding, hiding and planning to plant the grey towel as evidence.
NR: There is shock and concern in East London this evening after the suspected murder of Edward Shaffer. Mr Shaffer, who was found dead after falling from the balcony of his third-floor flat, was the proprietor of a popular children's dance academy. Earlier today, police were called to an incident at the academy when Mr Shaffer's vehicle was vandalised. Mr Shaffer was later arrested in connection with an inquiry into a historic child rape. However, he was released due to lack of evidence. The police have refused to confirm reports that Mr Shaffer had made an official complaint against one of their officers. They are appealing for witnesses to Mr Shaffer's death.
Scene 2 ( 00.50 - 01.39 )
Jack, blood on his hands, is being seen to by medics at the crime scene when Martha arrives. She asks Jack how he arrived so quickly, he replies he was close by and found Edward already dead.
MB: How did you get here so quickly?
JW:Hm?
MB: You arrived before Charlie, you're here, he's just fallen so how did you get here so quickly?
JW: I was close by, so I turned the car around, arrived here, he's splat on the ground. I tried first aid, but the guy's dead. That's when Charlie arrives.
MB: How hard did you try?
JW: Oh, come on. What's the primary objective? Don't give me that shit.
MB: This man was just about to put in an official complaint against you
JW: What, I pushed him off the top of the building
MB: I'm not suggesting that Jack but you're going to have to be very careful, there are guidelines. So I want you to go back to the station, fill in a duty statement, hand over your clothes for Forensics.
Scene 3 ( 01.40 - 02.19 )
Still at the crime scene Martha asks Charlie how Jack got there so quickly. She replies that she doesn't know, but that when she arrived he was administering first aid to Mr Schaffer. He fell from the top floor, but there is no sign of forced entry. Jack looks on, before making his way back to the car to return to the station.
Scene 4 ( 02.20 - 02.39 )
Back at the station Jack has showered and changes his clothes. He retrieves the bagged grey towel from his locker
giving a shady look before leaving the changing rooms.
Scene 5 ( 02.40 - 02.52 )
In the main office, Charlie watches as Jack hands in his clothes from the crime scene and the bagged grey towel, which he says he found at the tow path and would like fast tracked to forensics. Martha looks up from her office.
Scene 6 ( 02.53 - 03.34 )
At the suspects board, Martha and Jack give a team briefing about Edward Shaffer - they believe someone pushed him over the balcony. Jack tells the team that Shaffer killed Scott Freeman with a padlock and chain and that grey cotton fibres were found in the links, which he believes belong to the towels the Shaffers use at the dance academy and that he found a grey towel covered in blood at the tow path which he fast tracked to forensics. Martha asks was Edward killed by someone else in the paedophile ring who wanted to shut him up.
Scene 7 ( 03.35 - 04.21 )
Jack and Charlie report to Martha in her office. Jack says the Freeman sisters have an alibi at the time of the murder they were at the undertakers arranging Scott's funeral. Scene 8 ( 04.42 - 04.50 )
When Charlie and Jack arrive at the dance studio Tamsin is angry because her business is finished and she's had death threats. Jack tells her Edward is dead and her legs give way.
Scene 9 ( 04.51 - 05.41 )
Charlie takes a statement from Tamsin about her movements from when Edward left custody and the time of his murder. She said she had gone for a drink and not returned to the flat, but wished she had as she would have murdered him herself.
Scene 10 ( 05.42 - 06.44 )
Jack reports to Martha in her office on Edward's call data, he was receiving lots of voicemails from angry parents, one was more persistent and called about 20 times, the number has been traced to 27 year old mature student Justin Meercroft, and they are trying to find out why. As he is leaving Martha asks Jack why it took him so long to hand in the grey towel evidence. Jack prevaricates, and says he found the towel put it in his car, on his way back to the station heard the i-call about Edward so went there, but handed it in as soon as he returned and showered.
Scene 11 ( 06.45 - 08.08 )
In the 'soft' interview room, Jack and Charlie interview Justin who claims he was ringing Edward so much as he wanted to cancel the party he planned there because he has seen paedo on Edwards van, he had left a deposit and was keen to get it back. This afternoon, when Edward was killed, he was at the library and the card swipe system should prove that.
Scene 12 ( 08.09 - 09.24 )
Martha calls Jack into her office. The DCI has been asking about his 'slightly bizarre route' that took him so close to the Shaffers' house and they need to verify that route via his car tracker. Jack says he is being made to feel like he has done something wrong, Martha replies to just help her out, it is a very high profile case.
Charlie interrupts to show them footage from a usb stick found on Edward's key ring, which shows a group of men abusing a young boy.
Scene 13 ( 09.25 - 09.54 )
The next day in the main office, Jack tells Martha he has been going through missing persons files all night and found Andrew Gatting 13 years old has been missing for 3 days, who Martha and Charlie say is definitely the child in the abuse video.
Scene 14 ( 09.55 - 11.23 )
Jack and Charlie visit Andrew's Mum Tracy, who is reluctant to let them in, tells them Andrew is not here and if they find him to tell him to come home, then shuts the door on them. Jack knocks again and the two detectives enter the flat, Tracy is vague about where her son is but that he has definitely been home as he has raided the fridge, he took his scarf and drank her whisky. Jack tells her that Andrew has been a victim of sexual assault and she needs to come down to the station with them.
Scene 15 ( 11.24 - 12.16 )
Martha interviews a distraught Tracy, who tells her that when she last saw Andre they had argued, because he had taken money from her purse, but then she thought he had gone to school. She begs Martha to find him.
Scene 16 ( 12.17 - 12.43 )
Martha and Jack discuss the case in Martha's office, jack points out that Andre has not been seen for 3 days and that there is already one dead man from the video. Charlie comes in to tell them uniform have spotted a homeless man in a park wearing a scarf matching the description of Andre's .
Scene 17 ( 12.44 - 13.22 )
Charlie and Jack arrive at the park, when they approach the homeless man (Jeff) wearing Andre's scarf he runs away from them. They chase and catch up to him as he falls on the ground. On searching his bags, Charlie finds a near empty bottle of whisky. Jack arrests him on suspicion of child abduction.
Scene 18 ( 13.22 - 13.54 )
Martha interview Tracy again, showing here a photo of Jeff. who she doesn't recognise. She becomes upset seeing a photo of Edward, recognising him as the paedophile "on the news".
Scene 19 ( 13.55 - 15.28 )
Jack and Charlie interview Jeff (solicitor present) who claims he does not know where Andre is and that he has his school bag and scarf because Andre left them with him "for safe keeping". He tells them Andre had a job handing out leaflets about a missing dog, but he didn't return to him in the park. Jeff didn't alert the police because he was scared they'd pull him in.
Scene 20 ( 15.29 - 16.14 )
At the suspects board, Jack reports to Martha and Charlie that tech have enhanced the audio of the abuse footage and in the background a call to prayer could be heard, each mosque had its own unique call to prayer so he is going to investigate the local mosques. Charlie shows them some missing dog leaflets that have been found in the park where Jeff was picked up, presumably used by the paedophile ring to draw Andre away from the park.
Scene 21 ( 16.15 - 17.46 )
Charlie interviews Jeff again, who, they have discovered, used to be a teacher. Jeff confirms that the dog leaflet is the same on Andre went off to deliver, but he did not see the person who gave him the leaflets. Jeff left his teaching job after being accused of "inappropriate behaviour" with a pupil, but he explains he was wrongly accused and lost everything, becoming homeless as a result.
Scene 22 ( 17.47 - 18.30 )
Charlie tells Martha it is hard to tell if Jeff has been hard done by or if he is lying. Jack has found out that it is Wallbrook Road Mosque heard in the audio and a search radius has been identified. Charlie says Justin Meercroft's house is only two streets away. She and Jack rush out of the office.
Scene 23 ( 18.31 - 19.07 )
Arriving at Justin's house Jack knocks on the door, asking Charlie if she has checked out his alibi, they have a brief exchange of words as she replies she has not had time.
Breaking in when no one answers, they search the premises and find the room from the abuse video, as well as a tie with Andre's name in it. Jack calls Martha to tell her Andre has been there but has been moved.
Scene 24 ( 19.08 - 20.11 )
Back at HQ Jack tells Martha and Charlie SOCOs are at the house but haven't yet found anything to tell them where Justin has moved Andre to and his mobile has been switched off since they last saw him so no way to track him. Charlie suggests they look into how Justin moved Andre, and that she'll look into any stolen vehicles in last 24 hours.
Scene 25 ( 20.12 - 20.49 )
Martha is showing Tracy Andre's tie found at the scene when Jack knocks on the door asking for a quick word with Martha. Out in the corridor Jack tells Martha that the cadaver dogs at Justin's house have found the scent of a dead body. Martha rushes off telling Jack to "deal" with Tracy.
Scene 26 ( 20.50 - 21.33 )
Jack arrives at Justin's house, now a crime scene, meeting Martha outside. She tells him a body had been found but it is not Andre, that SOCOs think the body was buried up to 2-3 years ago and Central Murder Team are taking over on that, their focus is to find Andre. Martha tells Jack to cancel the press conference as they don't want to alert the paedophile ring and put Andre in more danger.
Scene 27 ( 21.34 - 22.10 )
Jack returns to Tracy and tells her that DI Martha Bellamy no longer thinks the press conference is a good idea. She becomes irate, but Jack reiterates they are not doing it.
JW: I've spoken to DI Bellamy and she thinks it's not a good idea to do the press conference.
TG: It was her idea!
JW: I know, I know.
TG: Why does she think... Why are we not doing it?
JW: Erm...
TG: It gets his face out there! I've been here ages. I could have been out looking for him! I just feel like you're not doing anything. Why are we just sat here?
JW: Tracey, there are certain sensitive aspects that we do not want to release.
TG: I want to do the press conference.
JW: Tracey, we're not doing it. That's the way it goes.
Scene 28 ( 22.11 - 23.44 )
Martha calls Jack into her office to question his whereabouts shown on his car tracker, when the I Call about Edward came through.
MB: I've been made aware that the car tracker puts you at Edward Shaffer's before the i-call. What the fuck is that about? Because it is clear that you have been lying to me. Why would you do that, Jack? Hm?
JW: Um...Yeah, OK, listen, I went round to Edward Shaffer's house to apologise, I wanted him to withdraw his complaint, I knew that complaint would make it much more difficult to convict him.
MB: The complaint wasn't the problem. The lack of evidence was the problem. You are a liar, Jack.
JW: What do you want me to say?
Martha is then alerted that Tracy has spoken to the press and rushing into the main office, asks Charlie to pull up the news. The 3 detectives watch as Tracy gives an impassioned plea about her son on the TV, saying the police are doing nothing. Martha and Jack argue.
MB: I thought you were handling this?
JW: No way I could have told her the press conference was cancelled because we found a dead kid.
MB: I just left this in your control, this is not what I had in mind...
JW: Yes, and this is not my fault.
MB: Well..
JW: I'm sorry, it's not my fault.
MB: So I'll just do everything from now on?
JW: No. no ..
MB: Is that the plan..
JW: You told me to do a job...
MB: This was not difficult.
CS: Tracey Gatting is waiting downstairs.
MB: Great. So I'll go and mop up after you, then
CS: What did you do to piss her off?
Scene 29 ( 23.45 - 25.01 )
Martha talks to Tracy, telling her that by talking to the press she has now alerted the perpetrators to it as well as the public and that the remains of a child have been found and Andre is in grave danger. She tells her they are now going to do a press conference appealing to his captors.
Scene 30 ( 25.02 - 25.20 )
Charlie tells Jack her research has thrown up a blue van went missing about half a mile from Justin Meercroft's house and that she has given the reg number to the ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) team. Jack looks visibly annoyed/upset still from his exchange with Martha, but asks her to keep him posted.
Scene 31 ( 25.21 - 25.52 )
Jack reports to Martha and Charlie that ANPR still haven't found the blue van but that he has done an "historic cell phone analysis" of his phone which showed he was within 300 yards of Edward Shaffer's flat and facial recognition have confirmed that Justin is definitely one of the abusers in the video.
Scene 32 ( 25.53 - 26.18 )
Jack tells Martha they cannot deal with the volume of phone calls off the back of her "press release". She replies that she has pulled in teams 2 and 3 to help with the enquiries. Charlie tells them the blue van had been located on Tavit Street, she and jack run out of the office.
Scene 33 ( 26.19 - 27.01 )
Jack and Charlie and a police car drive to where the blue van is located, while Charlie searched the van for Andre, Jack chases Justin, jumping over some barriers to catch him.
Jack restrains him while telling him "this is an urgent interview" and demanding to know where Andre is. Justin tells him to f*** off, while he and Charlie walk him to the police car.
Scene 34 ( 27.02 - 27.23 )

Scene 36 ( 29.08 - 29.24 )
In the main office, Martha informs Charlie that the forensics report on Edward's flat is back, Justin's DNA was all over the flat, the balcony and Edward's clothing. "So he's the one that pushed him over."
Scene 37 ( 29.25 - 30.50 )
Martha interviews Justin telling him his DNA is all over the crime site, so he killed Edward. Justin claims he went there to talk to Edward to figure out what they were going to do but Edward was stressed out about the argument with Jack. He then confesses to killing Edward, but as an accident and to killing the boy, who was found in the basement.
JM: When I got there, he was all stressed after an argument with your Irish copper. So I couldn't talk to him...
MB: Argument?
JM: When I turned up, your Irish boy was at the bins, and Edward saw him, went up to him and started shouting, both started having this argument. Then your boy left. I tried to calm him down, he kept shouting. I couldn't calm him down.
JM: So, you and Edward went up to his flat to avoid being seen! Well? Was he threatening you or...What was he doing?
JM: He was just threatening to spill everything. I didn't mean to kill him.
Scene 38 ( 30.51 - 31.21 )
Martha informs Jack and Charlie that Justin has admitted to the 2 murders, but will not say where Andre is. Jack points out it has been 48 hours since the abuse and " It's looking less and less likely that that kid is going to be found alive." Martha responds she would rather conduct the investigation as though they are looking for a boy who is still alive. As Martha returns to her office there is clearly tension between Jack and Martha.
Scene 39 ( 31.22 - 31.35 )
Jack shows Martha and Charlie CCTV footage of Justin Meercroft and Tamsin Shaffer together and asks "is Tamsin part of the paedophile ring too?"
Scene 40 ( 31.44 - 32.44 )
Martha and Jack interview Justin who claims Tamsin called him to ask him to meet her and she thinks he fancies her. Jack asks him outright if she is part of the paedophile ring, Justin replies she has no idea what is going on, which Jack challenges.
Scene 41 ( 32.45 - 33.44 )
In Martha's office Jack questions whether Tamsin could be so oblivious to what has been going on all these years, Martha replies that women in her situation are in deep denial.
Charlie comes to get them to see some CCTV footage of Tamsin Shaffer, collecting Andre from the park in the Shaffer van.
Jack gets on the phone, " we need urgent circulation on Tamsin Shaffer for child abduction."
Scene 42 ( 33.45 - 34.33 )
In the main office Martha asks Charlie if she is ok. Charlie responds that she personally showed Tamsin the way out of the station "fucking wicked work constable Steele." Martha replies that they are not superhuman and that it is easy in hindsight. Jack makes a small nod to himself with her comment. Martha continues to give a briefing to the full team on Tamsin, Charlie says she has activated a cell search on her phone but it is switched off and finding Tamsin is the key to finding Andre.
Scene 43 ( 34.34 - 35.22 )

Scene 45 ( 35.32 - 37.03 )
Charlie and Jack drive to the given address, a group of garages and immediately spot the Shaffer van. Jack spots blood coming from one of the garages and finds Tamsin with slashed wrist, Jack tries to revive her asking where Andre is. Uniformed police arrive and Charlie tells them to get every garage door open to search for Andre. Charlie finds him under a stairwell in the adjacent block of flats and calls an ambulance.
Scene 46 ( 37.04 - 38.53 )
Martha talks to Tamsin at the hospital who says she was doing what she was told, but she let him go, she denies ever assaulting a child and appeals to Martha for sympathy and understanding.
TS: Have you ever really really loved someone so much that you'd do anything for them?
MB: Shut the fuck up. Don't appeal to me as a fucking woman. I'm a mother, all right? Those children have got to live with this. They're still alive. God, you make me sick.
TS: You don't know anything about me or Edward. Or you would understand.
MB: I understand that your husband was a paedophile and you made sure he had a ready supply of little boys and girls to rape and kill. Wow, you're a disgrace. Get better soon, because we're gonna be looking after you from now on, OK?
Scene 47 ( 38.54 - 39.41 )
Charlie overseas Jeff's release at the front desk. He asks what happens now, and what about his job. Charlie responds she has written to the cps about the burglary as sympathetically as she could, but that she doesn't see there is much she can do about his job.
Scene 48 ( 39.42- 39.46 )
In the main office Martha tells Jack and Charlie the dead child at Justin's flat was identified as Arthur Kombo, Interpol think trafficked from Africa. Charlie asks after Andre, Martha replies he is physically ok but mentally he and Tracy are going to need a lot of support. Charlie says she wants to go to the pub and get "considerably drunk" Jack replies "yes!" but Martha tells him to come with her.
Scene 49 ( 39.47 - 42.21 )
On the rooftop Martha tells Jack to humour her with an apology and she knew what he did and planned and has had to pull in some favours to cover for his actions. She tells him he is a liar and informs him that he has to take an enforced 6 week holiday.
Jack takes a moment after she leaves.
MB: Do me a favour.
JW: Yeah.
MB: Apologise to me.
JW: What do you mean?
MB: Just show me what you look like when you're apologising. 'Sorry, boss,' something like that. It's a game. Just do it.
JW: Sorry, boss.
MB: Cos you weren't apologising, were you? When you went to Edward Shaffer's, and Justin was there to see that.
JW: Hang on, hang on. Hang on. l When I went to Edward Shaffer's, I said, 'Mr Shaffer, I want to apologise for the way I've behaved. I want to...'
MB: No. Hang on. YOU hang on, Jack. Don't try and hoodwink me, because I can see through it, because I know you, Jack. I've been watching you fuck it up! I mean, are you stupid?
JW: No, I'm not stupid.
MB: Let me describe a stupid cop to you. A stupid cop would be somebody who would take a piece of incriminating evidence and bung it into the bin of the prime suspect.
JW: I didn't... Listen, I know it's been a fucking shit week for me, OK...
MB: Well, it's been a much shitter week for me.
JW: I thought I was doing what needed to be done.
MB: I've had to speak to the DPS, I've had to pull a few fucking favours, favours I was rather keeping for myself. God, you are standing right on the fucking edge and I've a bloody good mind to give you a shove instead of constantly holding your hand. So, HR have said to me that you have six weeks' holiday due. I suggest that you take them. Don't send me a postcard.
Scene 50 ( 42.22 - end )
Jack returns to the office visibly upset. When Charlie says they can finally go for a drink Jack replies no and "ask the boss" when she asks what is wrong. He grabs his coat and keys and leaves.
Domino, they should just give you the story breakdowns!
I'm still unsure how much of this I can participate in. However, looking better as my company isn't coming over after all.

I would love to see to storyline breakdowns that they actually use when filming - to see what they work from.......they can't be as detailed as domino's are, though, cos they obviously don't include any dialogue!
If I'm not here tomorrow then send out a search party......
They work from a detailed plot description / script, which would be more directive / descriptive? It would be so cool to see even a glimpse of one, and how much detail is given.
Good news whimsy it would not be the same without your input!
fifi, I'll have Jack Weston in his car on standby.
I regret that I do not think I am going to be able to make it to this one guys. I have too much to get done around here to prepare for new floor installation (due to a flood), and I need to work a little bit today too. I should be able to make the next one though. Have a lovely chat as always!
