'BRASSIC': Damien Molony NEWS!

Well, when my Sky subscription runs out in August I'm not renewing, so it could well be Now TV for "Brassic" for me, too! I don't watch enough Sky to make it worthwhile, I mainly watch ordinary tv plus Sky Arts, which I love.

Ellie, NOW TV usually have some kind of free trial period too so that's a bonus!

You could say, I'm just too brassic to afford SKY (pun intended!)

Just listened to Joe Gilgun on the Two Shot Podcast.

I will admit I began listening hoping to hear about 'Brassic', but he's so real, so authentic...

and the whole thing is so human, I feel really inspired.

It's a podcast and it's online and it's one of the best examples I have ever come across of anti fakery on the web!

Also what an honour to have this insight into his creation of Brassic, from years ago, to completing it!

Don't listen if you're offended by language or looking for a Damien mention, however there is a very cool insight in the name of his character Dylan!

I'm sure it was interesting, domino, but I stopped listening very early on because of the bad language. It was totally unnecessary. I know you gave a warning but I hadn't realised it was so bad. I mean, signs like "Wet Paint, Don't Touch" just cry out to be ignored!I

Years ago my department head swore in front of me and I told him I didn't like it and would he not do it again. He did as I asked, I only had to walk into a room for him to stop swearing. When his secretary mentioned it I told her if she asked him to stop he would. She said she had too much respect for him (he was one of the best gynae oncology surgeons in the country, possibly in Europe) and that he needed to let off steam. Years later he said I was the only person in the department he really respected, because I wasn't afraid to stand up to him ( I was also the only one to insist on a receipt when he took money out of the charity petty cash).

Aw that is a shame Ellie because it was a really open and honest interview. Maybe someone will do a transcript and remove the bleeps for you!

More 'Brassic' tidbits as revealed by Damien in a new interview with IFTN! (more on the interview itself here)

We already know about the portaloo sex scene, but there area also scenes involving a sewer and being shot at by a farmer while they try to steal a shetland pony!

IFTN: How did the opportunity to get involved with Brassic come about?

Damien: “I had worked with an Irish director actually, Daniel O'Hara on Being Human. I jumped at the opportunity really to work with him again. Then, obviously, Joe Gilgun, he has created the show. I've been such a massive fan of his since This is England. Danny Brocklehurst has written the script and then there's a whole sequence in the show that takes places in a sewer. Once I had gone and read that I was pretty much on board.”

IFTN: For people who might not know much about Brassic right now, what could you tell us about it?

Damien: “The term brassic is rhyming slang. The stuff that’s in your pocket, the fluff. It's called lint, obviously, and there's a type of lint called brassic lint. If the only thing that you have in your pocket is lint, it means that you're skint, it means you're penniless, it means you're broke. So brassic lint is brassic equals skint. That's what the name comes from. Then the show itself is about a group of mates in the North of England getting into mischief. Fairly harmless mischief, but they're tearing around having the absolute time of their lives. The show is about friendship and it's about having a laugh with your mates and trying to make a quick buck along the way.”

“I said this at the Sky event, but I think a lot of small town shows, whether they're based in the UK or in Ireland or anywhere are usually about characters who want to get out of town and want to improve themselves in some way. Brassic is not about that. Brassic is about mates who are having such good craic that they have absolutely no interest in leaving. In a way, they're probably avoiding real life in a way and probably avoiding growing up, but they're not really too worried about that.”

IFTN: The show looks incredibly funny. I imagine it was quite a fun set to work on?

Damien: “Massively. We just laughed and laughed. I've never really been on a show before with so many regular cast. All being in together every day, for four months in Manchester was just great craic. The stuff that we would get up to-- I did something on this show for the first time every single day. When I'd be in the trailer in the morning and I'd facetime with my parents, they'd say, ‘What are you doing today?’ and I'd say, ‘Today we're being shot at by a local farmer while we try to still his Shetland pony.’ Or ‘I'm getting sprayed on by an exploding ‘fat bird’ in a sewer.’ There was lots of great craic to be had.”

IFTN: One ‘Brassic’ scene shown by Sky at the launch saw your character, Dylan, share an unflattering romantic scene in a port-a-loo with his love interest Erin, played by Michelle Keegan. How do you prepare for a scene like that, especially when you had only met Michelle for the first time early that same day?

Damien: “I've done a few of them at this stage. Sex scenes are just so bizarre because you're surrounded by 30 people of a film crew who kind of aren't really too interested in what you’re doing. First and foremost, there's absolutely nothing sexy about a Brassic sex scene. For the people involved, you just get on with it and you just try to have a good laugh really because you both understand the complete ridiculousness of the situation.”

And, it looks like a second series could be in the works!?

"..we're all really hoping for a second series of Brassic, so we're waiting hopefully to hear about that.”

OMG!!! I've just been selected to watch the pilot by Sky!!!
Can't talk about it (disclaimer signed) but it's terrific (the F word is used like punctuation, though).

WOOOOOWWWWWWWW Ellie! You mean, there is a pilot for Brassic and Sky are showing it to customers - online? That is amazing! Well. it is going to be very very hard not to ask questions about the content, but of course we will help you honour your 'NDA'...Interesting about the disclaimer, and shows very good faith on SKy's part. I've not seen any mention of there being a pilot anywhere, so their faith is well placed!

Really glad for you

Sky have certain customers they choose to see and comment on some shows before they air. Usually a pilot is shown, unfinished and before the final edit. I've taken part in several (one was "Brittania"). We sign a confidentiality agreement online before each. All the ones I've seen have been Sky Originals, some I've liked, some I've hated, all have aired and in most cases comments have been listened to. The difference now is that Sky have discontinued their forums so I don't know what others are saying. Different customers see different pilots, I've been lucky.

Wow Ellie!! How very, very exciting! What a brilliant thing for Sky to do - and how lucky for you!  I'm still not sure if/when I'm going to get to see this, not being a Sky customer myself (and there is a limit to how much TV streaming I'm prepared to pay for - I think I've already reached that limit, but we'll see.....) but I'm so glad that you really enjoyed it biggrin

Heads up Molonians in the UK!

The first Brassic promo will apparently air this Monday on Sky Atlantic during GoT.

For anyone interested and who doesn't have Sky, there is currently a free 7 day trial on NOW TV and you can stream the Sky tv channels with the entertainment pass on most devices.

I just caught the new Brassic ad too Ellie! coolbouncecoolbounce

Great promo, good length and showed all the characters. As you say, lots of Damien! Our first look at Dylan, woohoo!

Brassic looks set to be everything we had hoped for and more, thrilled to see a first glimpse of the complete show. So excited that I didn't think to look at the end of the ad to see if there was an air date?

The promo was also played during Game Of Thrones last night, so fingers crossed for more airings via Sky's live channels - which can be watched via NOW tv, currently free 7 day trial!

No sign of a 'Brassic' air date yet, but it is now officially summer and we have seen mention of a summer premiere -  fingers crossed for soon! fingerscrossed

Brassic and Damien feature in TV & Satellite magazine's Summer Preview!

brassictvandsatellite.jpg

Meanwhile, I stumbled across another obscure tidbit and this site who provide 'realistic cannabis props for film and tv' including Brassic.

I did wonder!

We are well into summer and no sign of an air date yet!

No, domino, it all seems to have gone quiet on the "Brassic" front, quite frustrating after all the hype.
Mind you, I'm of the mindset that has Summer starting round about now 😀 so there is still time. I've noticed a tendency on Sky to give just a couple of weeks notice of a programme starting, so I'll keep an eye out.

Thanks for the update Ellie, yes it is the summer solstice today so we are definitely well into summer! There was also mention previously of an Autumn premiere though.. I am hoping not. Please do keep us informed of any developments!

I noticed that this link I posted to the trailer and Brassic info on the SKY website no longer works - have they taken it down and everything Brassic related?

It looks like they've taken the ad off, domino. I downloaded it to my Sky Q box and I can still watch that but it's no longer available on the site. I suppose things just have a shelf life, unfortunately.

Thanks for clarifying that Ellie. Brassic hasn't aired yet so I'd say its well before its sell / due by date! Perhaps there is another reason it has been taken down, possibly put up fr marketing purposes to gauge early reactions? Hopefully more soon! fingerscrossed

Fingers crossed, domino! It would be a bit late to be looking for someone for season 1.
Realky, really looking forward to "Brassic".

Very true Ellie, so unless there is another show called 'Brassic' that we don't know about... it looks very much as if there is going to be a second series! woohoo
