I love Doctor Who. I've watched all of the new ones and am now watching the Hartnell episodes whenever I can on amazon. I love all of them but to me DT will always be the best  :)

Hi Miss_Lilli great to see you again! yes Mr Tennant seems to be the most popular in our poll so far.. He certainly captured a massive audience!

Wonderful you have the opportunity to watch the first Doctor in the US, seeing William Hartnell in all his black and white glory is like experiencing a piece of history!

It sure is! I love watching all the little quirks and idiosyncracies each actor brings to the role of the Doctor. I bet the original cast had no idea it would still be going strong today and be such a huge part of pop culture both in the UK and here in America. Truly awesome :)

I think i agree with you about Damien, but also feel he would be brilliant in the role, but not necessarily wanting to see him in it for the reasons already mentioned. Out of curiosity, when you say Damien is not right to play the Doctor, do you mean that you cannot imagine him in that role?

I love Damien, and I think he is an amazing actor, so don't get me wrong when I say this. I think the Doctor has to have a mix of quirk and charm and power and sadness. The amount of each of these differs between Doctors (Eleven, for instance, has a LOT of quirk) but there has to be an aspect of each in them. I don't think Damien has an aspect of each. Sure he has some quirk, some charm, some sadness, some power, but not in the amounts that makes a Doctor. Maybe later in his carrer after he has had some more experience on screen he will be right to play an incarnation of the Doctor.

Interesting Madison! thanks for sharing your point of view, no need to preface that,  though i understand why you did, but I am sure we can all disuss things without getting uppity if we don't always agree.

we shall then agree on our conclusion that we perhaps may not want to see Damien as the Doctor, but not our reasons for it! I see brimming to oveflowing of those qualities in Damen as an actor, in just one scene of him bringing Hal, in Being Human!

This is completely random, but here are some other actors I would love to see play the Doctor:

James McAvoy
Tom Hiddleston
Idris Elba
Benedict Cumberbatch
Colin Firth
Bill Nighy
Ian McKellen
Jim Parsons- he's so quirky as Sheldon in Big Bang Theory I think he could pull it off.

and if he ever got to be a woman AND ginger then my choice would be Gillian Anderson

I promise I'm not crazy lol

I think for someone to play the Doctor they have to have this certain something...and it's hard to find that something. I think it would be great to see Damien on Doctor Who! Just not as the Doctor.

If you look back on all of the Doctors they are somewhat similar...because the Doctor is always the same person, he might not look the same, but he is still the Doctor. I think a lot of the suggestions that people have for actors to play the Doctor just don't work because they aren't the same...

Idk, its hard to explain my exact feelings about it...

I think the Doctor needs to be played by someone we have never seen before! An entirely new actor! That or they could just bring David Tennant back ;) That would be the best!

Here I am - late as usual!!
And yes indeed - me, the OH and the kids are all massive Dr Who fans!
I watched it as a child and loved it - couldn't hide behind our sofa as it was pushed up next to the wall so used to run out into the kitchen instead!! My favourite Doctors - yes there are two - of that genre are Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker. Jon was the first Doctor that I remember, and I loved his frilly shirt and velvet jacket!! But I grew up more with Tom lol
I've loved all of the new Doctors - although *whispers* dear David Tennant did start to get on my nerves a bit towards the end of his time, but I think that was down more to the scripts which he had to put up with. I felt Dr Who just lost something a bit, towards the end of Russell T Davies' reign.
Loving Matt Smith and the way he portrays our hero - totally adore him. He's right funny looking but is so completely the Doctor. They are repeating series 6 at the moment on BBC3 and we watched "The Doctors Wife" last night - possibly one of my favourite episodes ever!
Although my top vote goes to the marvellous and absolutely terrifying "Blink" - the only episode I watched from behind the cushions on the sofa! Honestly! I was scared witless but what a fantastic piece of storytelling!!
And we now have a giant, six foot tall cardboard standee of a Weeping Angel in our hallway! I love them!! We've even given her a name - Gladys ;)))

Such an interesting discussion :D Lovely to read all the comments on Damien on Doctor Who :)

conflicted domino wrote:

@Steelmoth fascinating thinking process..I agree, the possibilty seems entirely plausible.

I would say that Damien doesn't need 'grooming' for anything, it is testament to his acting that so many fans who were invested in the previous Being Human lineup, especially Aidan / Mitchell, were so completely bowled over by his portrayal of Hal. He has already shown himself to be a mega talent, with a more than impressive range within that one character, he could turn his hand to anything and you cannot help but feel the future is bright, and BIG for him...for me personally Doctor Who as an iconic British institution could almost perhaps contain him into TV, when I have a personal penchant for him becoming a film actor!

@Sami It is deeply challenging to begin to even think of Damien as anything other than Hal on the screen for me too, but I also can see in him such massive potential to evolve into..... anything1

I completely agree with you Domino. It did cross my mind that Damien mind do something Doctor Who related because of Toby's involvement in both and his clear praise for Damien, but yeah, I'd love for him to do more theatre and a lot of film. Although ideally he could do all sorts of things without it hurting any other part of his careeer. But some reason I'd love for him more to do a guest stint or DW than be the Doctor. Although I have no doubt he could pull of a great incarnation :) I think he'd make a lovely, awkward yet charming and sophisticated Doctor, maybe a little less quirky than Eleventh XD

oh my goodness me San.... a Damien transformation ....now there is a thought! wow.

You  have just put your finger on it there, " ideally he could do all sorts of things without it hurting any other part of his career".

I agree with you about the Doctor Who guest appearance!

How have I not read this thread earlier?! Domino, I suddenly remember you mentioning it to me! Doh!

Jon Pertwee was my Doctor, and I'm fond of Patrick Troughton, and Matt Smith is easily my favourite from the new era.

As Jo was my first companion, I'll always have a soft spot for her and the Brig, of course, and Bessie! Sarah Jane is probably my favourite companion, and from the newbies, Donna. I loved Billie Piper at first but frankly, that shtick got old. As much as I loved Tennant, I found myself disappointed after the 'fake' regeneration they pulled. I agree with Brookesey. Russell T, at the end, gave a bit too much padding instead of story. After a little adjustment, the Moff has given me the strongest stories so far. I like Amy and Rory is now a favourite companion too.

I was never scared of the show as a child. Didn't understand all this watching behind the sofa business. But then I met a real dalek ... I was very young, on holiday, and a Dr Who exhibition was on. A life size cardboard cut out of Pertwee was being chased up and down the stage by a dalek and I had hysterics. I dived under an exhibit and refused to come out.

Karen Gillan's hair is very...made up isn't it? like she's overdone it on the heated rollers?

Before you all kill me, i loved the episode and given what the episode revealed at the beginning about hers and Rory's relationship and what she was doing...understandable but it was a bit weird for me. And her hair is stunning.

Matt Smith is My Doctor i have to admit. I used to watch it when i was around my daughter's age so i think from Jon Pertwee onwards, definitely from Tom Baker though i stopped around the Sylvester McCoy era and reinvested with Christopher Ecclestone. I have enjoyed each of the 'new' Doctor's but it is Matt who has captured my imagination and interest, i really respond to his interpretation of the Doctor, his irreverance and how his brain seems to go at a million miles an hour in a dozen different directions at the same time plus he makes me laugh.

I loved Asylum of The Daleks. It's great to have Who back on a Saturday night. Loved the suprise appearance. It seems to have got a mixed reaction from fans but i thought it was brilliant.
