But I do think this one shows his light and dark side together, as he teeters on the edge. The juxtaposition of what he's wearing (signifying his how he's managed to contain, repress, control himself the last 55 yrs) with the dark expression on his face and his head tilt (showing his annoyance and the promise of violence)

No one image could convey the depths of Hal...and there are so many more on top of the layers we have been shown, and what is so beautiful about that is how subtely it is given to us yet all pervading.
Great choice..Episode 2 has many Hal shades and polarities, here are a couple of other screen grabs which for me show many dimensions of Hal simultaneously and certainly convey so much...
these are also quite cuspy
these say something about the polarity most powerfully
and how about where we left him for some great Hal switcheroo

I agree, I can look at each and everyone of these pictures (I can, honestly!), and tell you why I like it. I could tell you which are my favourites. But it's just not possible to find one that says it all.
Yes to that first one....it's my avi, my sister made me a gif of it and i watch it regularly when i want to see that hint of menace from Lord Harry because that is Lord Harry at work.
Okay, i don't have the picture but when Hal is building his domino spiral and he's talking about how he likes routine. His eyes in that scene, especially when Pearl interrupts and there's the flash of wildness there. That says it all to me.
Agreed Lisa, good choice and for me from that scene it is,
"I still do, it's part of my routine now, Annie" the way he emphasizes the words dfferently , so much is conveyed in that one sentence...pehaps not all of his many facets but...
And Domino, yes to that first pic from the 'i like routine' scene. That's the one i was thinking of, all through that scene you can see his emotions, know what he's thinking by watching his eyes. Every time i watch that scene, i watch his eyes. He is utterly mesmerising.
The suit for me for so many reasons - not least the that is seems to personify the Halness, his age, his pomposity, the way he stands with hands in the pockets awkwardness and at the same time devastatingly charming and debonair, a wink to his past and some of the values he holds, something about containment and control too. yes all tah from a suit! As series 4 progresses and Hal ventures back out into the world and has those rare glimpses of joy where he believes he can really do it, live in the world without hurting people, his costume relaxes and evolves with him. If we were to see him back in his suit it would be a reflection of what is going on inside. I believe.

oh yes, ruby......the eyes.......in just about every scene. I read an interview with Toby Whitehouse in which he said that casting Hal was difficult because he wanted someone in their 20s whose eyes looked 500 years old. Well.....he hit the jackpot with Damien, didn't he?
I agree about costume too, domino. As he relaxes his dress gets less formal. Although the brown suit has quite a casualness (?) about it, and he wears it without a collar...not the sharp suited 1950's hal...it is somehow a reflection of his past. It's interesting that wears a formal suit for his date with Alex.....when he's blood-drunk. It suits his character (hal would dress in a suit for a date), but it is an echo of an earlier Hal. I wonder whether that's why the 'hal manager' suit sparked off thoughts in my head......?
