Sounds like his reading was marvelous to behold.  I was especially tickled pink by the comment of the author Toby Litt: "funny/furious".  I'm crossing fingers that World Theatre makes the video of the readings available.

I echo both Ruby's and hermyownee's views in terms of how appalled I was to hear about "the incident".   Ruby, everything you said.  And you said it so well, much better than I did.  I made my views clear on tumblr in hopes that either it reaches this person or at least lets whatever fans read it know that this sort of behaviour is inappropriate.

I don't know why I feel this frothing rage that he had to deal with a fan that was so disrespectful he had to ask that she not be let in.  Some would say it comes with the territory and he's going to encounter the crazies out there more and more, heck we don't even know what sort of stuff he's gotten in fanmail, but I feel embarrassed that I have to lump people like her in the same category as myself - fan - and feel like personally apologizing to him.  It makes no sense but it's how I feel.

Regardless of what she did it was an invasion of his personal space and his privacy and it sounds like it ruined the generous act he was doing. And also I'm frankly pissed that you girls, who paid and planned and traveled so far, were caught up in that.  You are representatives of his faithful and respectful fans and its a shame that you had this act mar your evening and your chance to meet with Damien showing him your support.  Well, he recognized most of you, and from the sounds of it he wasn't ignoring you, but was simply overwhelmed.

I better stop cuz I'm making less sense to myself.

Thanks for sharing your stories ladies.  Always so AWESOME when online buddies get to meet in person.  That's just as fun and heartwarming to read about than the Damo encounters.

Just to add here for those who may have missed it:

Damien also gave readings for WordTheatre last night at The Forward Prizes for poetry awards 2013, at the Southbank Centre in London.

Pics and more on the event in this topic

It sounds like you all have a lovely evening (apart from red coat lady!). It must have been lovely to see him perform live, especially for you Kat!

How close to the stage were you all? how many people were in the audience? trying to get a fell for the event itself
I tried to track down/buy the Toby Litt short story People Carry Roses today but alas it appears to not be available.

We were in lots of different places because we were sat after most of the other ticket holders.

I was left of the stage for the first half (with Su, Becca, Brookesey and Shoe) and stood at the bar for the second half. Everyone else was spread around the place...

It was a small, very intimate venue, I would say there was around to 80 to 100 people in the room at most.
As Kat said we were kind of all dotted about the room perching where we could (or where told to sit by the eager Word Theatre lady).

Domino - Toby Litt tweeted earlier that his story isn't available in a book yet but that it was in issue 2 of the magazine 'Short Fiction in Theory & Practice'

I understand, and feel that too. But at the same time, giving out information and attending events does not make us responsible for the behaviour of another 'fan'. Our responsibility is to act and speak appropriately, online and in real life, which we do, and as you know the forum has always safeguarded against invasions of privacy and tried to set an example of what being a fan does and does not mean.  it does unfortunately damage fandoms and their interactions with their heroes though and that is also what is so sad about it as well as just feeling sick to the stomach about the invasion of Damien's privacy.

Anyway, am glad you all went to the event and had this opportunity to see Damien reading, the venue sounds plush but you had as much right to be there as anyone else hug

Hello all! This is the first opportunity ive had to get on here and it looks as though youve already heard the low down but ill leave you my version just in case anyone cares.

It wont be as detailed as others since i didnt eat all day and drank 5 glasses of wine....ahem.....

I met becca and fifi at paddington at 3 ish and we headed off to our hotel to change and drop off out things. After deciding i looked like daphid and had just jumped off a harley (dont ask) we headed off to the club. We found it quite easily and instantly i felt out of place with a door man in a top hat stood outside!

We decided to go for a quick drink ( or 3) while we waited for everyone else. Most of the others joined us but we got a call saying that Laura and Kat had entered so we thought we better get our arses over there!

Me, Shoe, Brookesey and helen were under lauras name on the guest list. When we walked in they checked us off and then asked us to stand to the side. Everyone else was just signing in and going straight in so we thought it was a bit weird. After about 5 mins we were starting to get a bit frustrated so asked why we had been stopped.

A lady explained that someone had upset damien outside and left him pretty shaken up. We were all shocked and i think that translated. I was concerned and asked if he was alright and they said he had been in a bit of a faff but had calmed down now but they had been asked to keep an eye out for a lady in a red coat and brookesey was wearing a red coat. I explained that we had only just arrived and knew nothing about it, i also said damien knew us and knew we wouldnt do anything like that. They finally let us in.

The venue was lovely, exactly like the pictures i had found. We got some drinks and stood around chatting. I didnt even notice damien was sat right behind he in a curtained off area for ages until i spotted him out the corner of my eye. He was chatting to the other actors and didnt look over or anything. We were encouraged to take some seats right at the front by the host and so we did. We were sat to the left of the stage and damien was on first. His reading was funny. He started off really shakey but seemed to relax into it as he carried on. He was clearly nervous but i really enjoyed the story. I felt he had some Hal quirks to his performance which i enjoyed. He was visibly releaved once he finished.

The other stories were good too, my fav was by elizabeth mc..thigy. Really good story and totes emosh. Ben millar was good too, he's very good and didnt seem fazed by it all. After the perfomances like the others said, everyone literally got up and left straight away. The actors and writers had some quick pictures and then they scarpered too including damien. I didnt even get to say hello to damien which was a shame but the night was really good and i would defo go to another word theatre event given the chance.

That was longer than i thought.....lol!! xx

Thank you Su! Reading your account I feel even more saddened by this incident Damien had with a fan, how awful, for him and for any human being to have to face that invasion..and it sounds like it threw him off his performance too. I am trying not to be angry because I don't want to give the situation more fuel than it deserves. But..this makes me even more vigilant about the forum and the fan site and the kinds of questions comments people make, and a certain fan attitude which I really cannot stand. we already have a no invasion of privacy policy but I will no have no hesitation in moderating jokey comments because it is not funny, this kind of stuff happens in real life..Although the wordtheatre event was in google alerts and their email newsletter and their website it makes me feel like we can't even give out info of his public events. Sad sad sad.

Yeh like laura said we all felt responsible in a way. I felt awkward, like he'd had a bad experience and felt like he just didnt want interact with any of the fans because of it.

It's made me think a lot about meeting him at stage doors and going to all his events and stuff. I don't want to come across in a way that could make him feel uncomfortable. I'd never want to make him feel that way.

He probably doesnt even feel bothered by it anymore but it has played on my mind since it happened. I dont think ill tweet openly about smaller events like this again. Big public events, theres nothing we can do about, but this was a small event and i dunno.....im probably just overthinking it all lol x

Su,

Just read your words on what happened. And i'm with Domino in the feeling bad for Damien part, I can imagine having someone throw their arms around you, or whatever, uninvited and unexpected, must be off putting and upsetting but for Damien to be that upset, it had to be really frightening. It had to be horrible for him and i do expect it shook him out of whatever mindset he was in for the performance. Just horrible.

BUT... we are all fans of Damien's. I'd like to think that when he tweets about something and he reads them back then he'll recognise one or two or more of the names responding to him. He recognises you ladies when you go to see his plays, see him at the stage door and when you were set-stalking. He's grateful for the support, he said to me that he was. He was grateful when you all met him the last time and gave him gifts and stuff, when you all said that you were fans of his as well as of Being Human. He was touched. You all know the boundaries and you know when to keep to them and not to cross them. It's normal and natural. An announcement of a play, a reading or a television project including him and it's natural to want to talk about it, to want to go and see whatever it is he's appearing in and tweet and facebook about it. You do it because you're a fan of his. What and how someone else reacts to him, however innapropriately, is not your fault, or your responsibility. We don't know how this person found out about it, i assume she uses social media like the rest of us. Quite possibly she saw Damien, perhaps for the first time in the flesh and got overexcited and completely over-reacted, we don't know. But it isn't OUR fault.

I'd like to think that Damien knows that we're not all like that. I can imagine that what happened to him prior to the performance just shook him and he just wasn't in the mood to be pleasant or sociable. The test will be if and when he does any more theatre. If he doesn't appear at the stage door then we'll know, if he does, then it was just a little bump in the road. All we can continue to do is support him as an actor as we have done and will continue to do so.

Just reading though as much as I can, its a shame this happened, I always think there are some that spoil the experience of meeting someone. They may think they are the 'biggest fans' but a fan would respect personal space, situation, and treat those who they admire well and want them to feel at ease, as it must be scary meeting folk they don't know, who know about there work at least.

Oh my, I'd forgotten about this.  I had a rant on tumblr about red-coat lady!  Shame on her!  Seems she dropped off the grid, thankfully.  I see tweets from people that see Damien on the train or in other places and gratified to hear that most fans are respectful.  He even said something about not being recognized much, no one coming up to bother him.  I would hate for him to feel alienated from most of his fans by a few bad apples.

On another note, Word Theatre still owes us a video!  Or at the very least the audible download...
