Absolutely stunned by tonight's episode! Flight is everything I imagined him to be and so much more! and Damien has more screen time than I thought he may have, thrilled he has sch a substantial role. His introductory scene was so full of swagger, he smoked in it which was a bit of a surprise, but that added to his cockiness and mystery somehow. He even blew smoke into Jackson's face..hilarious!
Flight managed to get himself into a fight and became a hero..only to have that shine (pun intended) tarnished at the end.....
Another beautiful production with a breathtaking and particularly heartbreaking storyline, fragile and fierce in equal measure.
I AM disappointed we didn't see his name in the opening credits! I imagine his screen time will be similar if not more than what Charlene Mackenna had last Series and while her name no longer appears, it did in S1.

These are lovely and exciting and lovely and...I think I've run out of positive superlatives! Have to keep some back until after I've actually seen the episode, lol!
Also meant to say that I love how he turns round and Reid, Drake and Jackson just look at him going, "Seriously? HE'S the reinforcements? Excellent..."
The tension is amazing... and Damien appearing with the three established characters, in the H-Division headquarters... it is an awesomely surreal moment! and the swagger! I love Flight already!
I agree with everything you said Domino. The scene where he defended Joseph Merrick was stunning! He is a great asset to the squad - and the programme.
I had connectivity issues so totally missed his introduction scene! But I will definitely be rewatching it tonight and tomorrow.

It was heartening that despite the fact that he's ambitious and cocky, he has heart. He has good intentions and seems to be a good man.
When he fell asleep I was yelling at the TV NOOOOOO. Because if Reid and co find out he fell asleep they'll never trust/accept him. And even if they don't, he will carry around that guilty conscience. He looks devastated (to me) when he's looking into Merrick's room. He might already realize he fell asleep and something could have happened on his watch.

I think his name will appear in the second group of credits in the opening credits, you get the pictures accompanying Matthew, Jerome and Adam's name and then second shot is just a group of names. It may happen after episode four for example as while we know he's a new cast member, he's literally just been introduced.
It was lovely to see Damien back on screen again. And that accent is Irish, watered down here and there (the reasons why to be revealed in a later ep perhaps?) but it was there. It was a very solid debut, the new boy wanting to impress the boss but unwise to the ways of Whitechapel. He'll get there in the end but i saw his frustration at wanting to make a good impression and Reid's reticience at letting him, remembering Hobbs (as Homer said, he wasn't Hobbs) but i'm intrigued about Flight and what we might learn about him in future episodes.
Wasn't too keen on the idea of Shine being the one who killed Joseph Merrick, there's toying with history and then there's meddling and that bordered a bit on the meddling. Shine also intrigues me, he'll smile at you before he rips out your throat. Very intense actor.
Has everyone had a chance to catch up with Damien's debut in Ripper Street? what did you think? come and vote in the poll at the top of this thread! thank you to those who have voted and commented so far!
Due to time differences, I had to wait until 10 pm to watch and was feeling tired and a bit under the weather and considered just watching today. But then the show started and the anticipation of seeing Damien back on the screen overcame any tiredness and I watched the whole thing with rapt attention. Love the whole episode. There were some great moments of depth and emotion. I loved that it was Flight who came to Merrick's rescue out on the streets. I had so hoped he'd come to the rescue once again at the end. :( Still, whatever dark secrets Flight may have, it seems he's good at heart. Yay!
I'm still to watch the whole episode through - and I think I'll have to watch it a second time anyway as I wasn't really paying enough attention, but what I've seen so far was very enjoyable indeed.
Not sure I'm happy with Flight being a smoker, but can understand it was probably de rigeur for young people with means to smoke. Did like him blowing smoke into Jackson's face though, so arrogant, but then brought down a good couple of pegs in the boarding house when he got smacked!
Still to see the very end of the episode, but am looking forward to seeing more...and seeing his name in the credits (I think they'll add him next week as he's now in the cast).
Hi Duizend Talpen, thanks for sharing your reaction, good to read you here
The wave of excitement for Damien's debut was tangible, sounds like you felt it too!
Yes, you have pinpointed that moment where we see where Flight's baseline moral code points, in that moment he is a hero and although that is somehow seemingly tarnished by him falling asleep while guarding Merrick later on, resulting in Shine being able to do what he did he was only involved, not intentionally.
I found Jackson's comment about Flight not being Hobbs intriguing..not just a kind of 'he's not a great a man as Hobbs' , but it felt like a laden statement like he sensed a whole lot of things about Flight!
I am conflicted about the smoking thing, not in any moral sense because Damien is a grown man and what he does with his body is his own business, but it was just odd seeing it, but that oddness very quickly turned into fascination because of the way he used that one cigarette as a prop, in such an amazing way...said so much about Flight in that whole dialogue-free exchange with him, Jackson, Drake and the whole of H-Division..as he entered their 'territory' !
My heart started pounding as soon as he appeared! I love his Irish twang.....very manly! The scenes where he first came to Merricks aid i found very moving & first impressions are that i'm liking Flight very much! The smoking was not a issue for me as most French Actors smoke on & off screen! killing Merrick off so soon is unforgivable.Oh & i thought i heard Reid mention my name!!!!!!
The thought just occured to me (not that I would be watching this ep now, or anything).....when Abberline introduces Flight to Reid - how does Reid know that he's been working in Bloomsbury? Abberline is telling Reid that Flight has worked overtime, that he has a high "collar-rate", and has requested a transfer to Whitechapel....but at no point mentions where he is tranferring from. And yet Reid says "..in Bloomsbury"! It kinda suggests that Flight has a reputations which preceeds him.....
ooh well spotted fifi, I thought maybe it was just an abstract reference to wimpy style policing (maybe it was a a phrase of the day or something?) and / or an assumption on Reid's part?
