I adore this picture! and I can't decide which idea I like best....the thought of him posing in the mirror of his trailer for his own entertainment....or with the intention of posting the pic on twitter!!
Either way....I'm not sure that 'Flight to the rescue' is very apt description of what happened....

hehehe, I know right fifi. I can picture him posing for this and texting it to his best mates. they probably got a good laugh! He definitely likes to do the finger gun thing... I giggled at the "yo" at the end. He's a fan of Breaking Bad. Jesse in that show says yo all the time, maybe he picked it up from there.

This is the first episode that I've wanted to rewatch straight away!!!
Flight really came into his own in this episode and became a character in his own right finally!
I am very excited to see how this weeks revelations effect the final episode!
Ps I totally called it that he was working for shine!! Haha x

@whimsy totally with you on the swagger walk - or, if I may, the sexy saunter - the long shots of him and Reid walking in their overcoats and hats... *swoon*
@fifi Aw, you are right, it is all kinds of awesome that Damien has taken all these behind the scenes Ripper Street selfies with the intention of sharing them! Good on him!
@Kimberfly and glofigs he really does look young here! and laddy! love it!
@Su It was fab to see Damien have more screen time again, but ep 4 was the one where I felt he made his first big impact!
@gofigs I must confess.... the whole scene by the boxing ring with Shine and Flight was a rampage of emotions! but yeah.. was heavily in there somewhere...which made the whole thing (pardon my french) a bit of a headfuck!
"Do not forget what you were when i first found you, a little paddy wretch destined for jail or an early grave. Now look at you, quite the CID swell."
Are we thinking that Flight has been trained up fully as a constable or was he fast tracked through and his credentials are not real? both in terms of his actual ranking but also in terms of his recommendations of merit and his collar rate as mentioned in episode 2 by CI Abberline to DI Reid?
Domino, I feel that Flight's youth and inexperience are an indication that Shine has indeed influenced Flight's career.
So we were discussing this on Skype (yes, we do more than just look at Damo pics & giggle on there )
When Shine said "little Paddy wretch", I interpreted it as he probably found Flight as an orphan still very young, in Ireland. He's probably been his benefactor and the one that brought him to England. I wouldn't be surprised if he actually named him Albert Flight, since that's not a very Irish sounding name...
And the way they were together in the boxing scene, Flight helping Shine remove the gloves and put on the shirt had a very intimate, practised feel to it, so I can see a young Flight hanging out when Shine is sparring, being his little errand boy, getting him water and helping him just as he did in that scene.
Trying to figure out a timeline is not so straightforward however. Shine spent 10 years in China and he "stole" Blush Pang from there. Long Susan said Blush had come to England 2 years prior, and her brother said Shine had taken her when she was very young. So when DID he find Flight? Maybe not as young as I interpreted it? Unless either Flight or Blush aren't as young as they look, and Shine's 10-yr stay in the Orient wasn't that recent. Or he found Flight before, has been his benefactor, but from afar, sending money and letters and getting him into the police/greasing the wheels for promotions. And they've only reunited recently? He's been sheltered from Shine's less savoury dealings...
Both episodes were written by the show creator, so you'd think the continuity would have been thought out. I'll have to give it more thought, would love to hear everyone's thoughts.
And damn, shame Flight didn't get in the ring as Shine's sparring partner...

whimsy - that's pretty much my take on things too. Flight appeared very comfortable and relaxed in Shine's company, and familiar with the ring-side senario - even to the extent of perching on the edge of the ring. Everything suggests that they have known each other for a while...but it's very difficult to match that in with Shine having been in Hong Kong for 10 years. Flight seems to have recieved a decent education, so I guess it's possible that Shine financed that from afar, but it doesn't really explain the 'intimacy', as you put it. If Shine's time in Hong Kong was before he 'found' Flight.....then his relationship with Blush Pang doesn't really work......
As for whether he was fast tracked - his research skills are obviously very effective, but he really does seem to be lacking hands on experience.....Shine said he had been well protected and yes....I suspect that he's been given a substantial helping hand. That being said, Shine has to have had some faith in his abilities for undercover work.....
It's also pretty apparent to me that Flight loves his job...and seems to genuinely to want to help people. It seems that his naivity prevented him from anticipating the conflict between working for Shine and his own desire to impress Reid, and do a good job. I also love the irony in the answer Drake gave to Reid's question 'what use our work' - 'to protect'......when Flight can't arrest Werner because the jeweler is paying Shine protection money.....
Unfortunately, and rather frustratingly, all of the questions thrown up by the revelation of this relationship are unlikely to be addressed, as there are so many other relationship threads to be dealt with....it has been revealed so late in the series that, with only one episode left, there is surely not enough time to do anything other that play out events as they happen.
I'd wondered at the relationship between Shine and Flight given that Shine was in Hong Kong for ten years, but we don't know how long ago that was or how long Shine has been Inspector at K Division. He could've returned and took young Flight under his wing, to pardon the pun.
@Whimsy and fifi, very well said, my take is the same... the familiarity and "young paddy wretch" does imply is it not at all recent past, Flight may have been a child even. How that fits in with Flight's moving speech in episode 4 about not having any parental guidance and not knowing what is right or who he is, I'm not sure... how much was Shine a 'parent' or guardian or is he referring simply to the job?
Yes that may be the case too Lisa, how old do we think Flight is?
He comes across as being very young in the show, especially in those cell scenes of episode eight. I think Flight is close to Damien's actual age, perhaps mid to late twenties? But he seemed to have been fast tracked through the police force to make detective given the first conviction on his rap sheet was in 1885 and series two is set in 1890.
I wish that I could watch this episode again as if for the first time! I remember being so shocked when we discover what Flight has been up to. I hadn't suspected at all! I tweeted at the time that Flight had broken my heart!
Also Werner calling Flight Daphne always makes me laugh. Victorian trash talk!

Absolutely loved watching this episode on terrestrial TV again last night. A top performance from DaMo who conveyed every facet of Flight beautifully.
Rosie, on the one hand I wanted to hug Flight, but on the other I wanted to scream "nooooo" at him!
The re-watch as always threw up even more subtle elements of his story for me... especially the mirroring of his relationship with Reid and his relationship with Shine. Flight is not an outright duplicitious villain, he is a reluctant one and he alsmost (but not quite) comes over as a victim in this episode because he has a genuinely innocent desire to do good, to serve and to please Reid...and his denial about his inevitable discoverablity has such a tragic tension to it. He is trapped into a deal with Shine that he doesn't in his heart want to be part of. But part of he very much IS.
In terms of Flight I refer to Reid as good daddy and Shine as bad daddy. Flight has looked to them both for guidance and wants to please them both in different ways.
I also want to shout nooo at Flight but I just feel incredible sympathy for him. He has got himself into a terrible situation in which he is completely out of his depth and does not have the mechanisms to deal with on his own. And he is completely on his own here, he can't turn to anybody to help him (or he feels he can't ) and as we will see in the next episode ends up taking very drastic action. Which is why I want to hug him. And for reasons.
There seems to be a queue for Flight hugs or so it seems from last night's chatbox ;) Great episode which as you say domino throws up more complexities with each watch.
The bit where Flight flinches when Reid hits Werner always gets me
