Well...I enjoyed the 1st ep and I'm already looking forward to next weeks.
I'm surprised by how much I caught up by the plot - it definately held my attention. The whole shaky camera/peeking round a corner filming technique thing might not have been used in this context before, but is familiar....and I must admit that I mostly wasn't aware of it, so I guess it must've worked for me.
I agree about the mumbling thing, whimsy - never sure if it's just my ears! My only other criticism would be that I didn't feel Fay Ripley - as a DI - was really authoritative enough....but - assuming that the eps were shot in chronological order and last nights ep was the first couple of days filming, when they were all finding their feet a little - I'm pretty hopeful that she will hit her stride.... She has said in interviews how daunting she found it initially.
I thought the whole cast did a pretty impressive job - it must be harder for the main trio because the nature of the show means that they have to lead the storyline forward. I can't help thinking that when I (inevitably) watched it again on 5+1 my brain did a little shift....and the improvisation aspect became less obvious. Watching it as a drama meant that I was very aware that it was being improvised because, yes - the dialogue didn't always flow, and at times they really did seem at a loss for what to say. But in reality conversations rarely run smoothly, people are not always articulate, and I'm sure that in police interviews they often just don't know what to say next (in fact in that situation experience must count for a lot.....and hopefully as the series progresses, the actors will have similarly learnt a little from experience!) And I would be really surprised to find that the police never swear...!!
I finally got to see this, this afternoon. It was meh. Not really my kind of show, although jack's bits were really good. Loved the position he was in when they were talking about Toby not opening up. Foot on wall. Leaning up against it. i prob was the only one that laughed when jack spotted the comvient store guy. I dont know for sOme reason I found that line funny. I see what you guys mean about the low voices. Jack is very cool and collected isn't he? His shirts are rather a little tight aren't they? ;) I did love how he said "daughter" . It's amazing how world apart this character is compared to Hal and Flight. The main three have a good dynamic.
how bout that arrest scene eh??:cuffs2: He really is quite talented isnt he?

"We've been played! My God! We've been played!"
"Annie's getting hysterical downstairs and I'm not enjoying it"
"kill me. Kill me now. You can tell Annie that I attacked you or something"
"“Were you guys talking about me? I heard ‘clearly gorgeous’”
I rather enjoyed this show and I am looking forward to seeing more. I agree it would be nice if they showed unwinding scenes and such but in this format that would feel invasive so I'm good with only showing work time. Glo - it is probably because he said something about getting some coppers and heading out or something but the first time I heard it, it sounded like "cuppa";) Going in, I knew it was documentary style and I thought they did a great job with it. I liked that the lighting wasn't perfect and the glare in the interrogation room when he was standing, though obnoxious, added to the feel of the show. Other than that, I'm horrible at writing reviews so… (I'm)patiently waiting for the next ep.
I just watched it! Loved it! I love these kinda shows, so I'm so happy to see Damien on one that is showing a lot of promise. And it's the first time I've seen him in anything since Being Human ended, so this is extra exciting. Can't wait to see more! :)

I watched it again today and could catch a lot more of the dialogue. Damien has got a soft voice but eventually you can hear what he says. I wonder if the swearing was Damien's take on how DS Jack Weston would speak, or is it how Damien himself speaks?
I thought it was a very interesting show I did how ever find it very difficult to get into the storyline at the beginning, it was only around the half way point it started to pick up for me. I was constantly aware the main 3 improvised bits and for some reason thats all i kept thinking about for that first 20 mins. if every time they paused were they trying to think of something or where they trying to remember something rehearsed before. I think if it was advertised as a documenrty style crime drama i wouldbt have been thinking about it for the first 20mins.
I thought as a whole the woman (I forgot her name, not faye ripley, the other one) was very good in it very natural. i agree with who ever said faye character didnt appear in this ep at least, to be the authority figure in it. There where parts i couldnt hear at all..... most of which came from Damien.... also there was a part when door banged in the interveiw room and for that second you couldnt hear anything what was said. i was also surprised there wasnt more swearing. I know most crime drama from uk (after) 9pm they do throw in a few odd words but it always bugs me there is never more.
The next ep seems to have an interesting storyline so im looking forward to it.
knightley, have you not seen RS yet? I guess it premiers next week right?
Pearl, it's probably a little of both? I've heard him swear on the stage door video.
I just re-watched and liked it even more the second time around. I could concentrate more on watching Jack's reactions than the story line itself (yeah I know, you'd think it would have been that way the first time). And I also caught more of the dialogue. So I could appreciate him more. There were only a few times I thought his reactions were off - I actually expected he would get more emotional with the dad, yell at him more, but you could see it was simmering, he contained it then walked off slamming things. So Jack is trying to control himself. And a couple of times it seemed like he didn't know what exactly to say, but then the next scene he would make up for it by being totally in control.
I have to say one thing I didn't like was Martha. Charlie and Jack seemed competent and capable, but Martha stumbled. And I'm not talking pauses and umms... more like she didn't know the lingo, or hadn't encountered this before. Like when they are in the hallway talking about Toby, and she says something like "it's hard with juveniles, isn't it, I don't know how much he can say or is capable of saying..." I would think they have counselors specifically trained to deal with children, and should have one present at all times. Or when she said "ok the next step we need to do is such and such, isn't it?" Like she's questioning them.
But overall I loved it and actually am more excited to see next week's episode as it looks even more intense and they would have gotten into a better rhythm by then.

We just watched the first episode. My boyfriend and I both enjoyed it. The case kept us guessing so that's good. I might enjoy it more on a second watching so I can pay more attention to Damien's performance. Overall I enjoyed it but I don't like the faux documentary style. I find it very distracting. I'm totally with Whimsyfox on not liking the sneaking up behind the wall camera work. It draws attention more to the fancy (ironic) camera work. I felt like I had to focus so hard on what was happening that I couldn't pay enough attention to the characters. As usual, I think part of that is because as an American I have to listen hard to decipher what is being said due to accent differences anyway. The fancy camera work makes it that much harder.
Still, I think Damien did an excellent job as usual considering what he had to work with and I did enjoy it.
I think I'm just spoiled by the fact that Hal was such a unique character and the dialogue on Being Human was just so fantastic. I'm afraid nothing will ever grab me quite the same way again. Sorry, I just became a downer didn't I?
I really am excited to get to see Damien in a major role again.

whimsyfox- I downloaded the first ep of RS that he was in, but then got lazy and behind and figured I'd just wait till it was on BBCA. It starts next weekend, so it'll still be 2 more weeks till his eps begin. I know I lagged on that cuz I knew it would be on TV here. I have to stay on top of Suspects though cuz I'm not sure if that'll air here.
It's nice to see him in something "real." It's a cool change of pace to see him in. i'm going to watch it again tomorrow cuz i kept on having to pause it cuz i was watching figure skating at the same time haha. :)

I really enjoyed the first episode! Thought jack was brilliant (obviously) and i love that he seems really passionate about the case he is working on. The look he gives at the end is full of emotion.
I'm not one for crime dramas really, however i do like police chase shows etc, this seems like a combination of the 2 and i liked that.
The viewing figures seem a tad dissapointing. I'm sure channel 5 feel the same. Reviews like robs wont help that though either which is annoying.
Either way it was a solid first episode and our damo did us proud :) x

Sooner or later, we all go back to being the monsters we truly are!
I think it did okay in the ratings, given the night and the time slots. 900k given that 'Line of Duty' on BBC 2 which had been hyped to death on the BBC got only 600k more the hour before. The true test will be whether episode 2 of Suspects will get anywhere near the same amount of viewers than episode one. I don't think they were that disastrous given the size of the channel in comparison to BBC and ITV (if Suspects had been on either of those channels and got 900k in the same timeslot then fair enough)
And Rob's review was in the minority. He went in expecting something and it didn't live up to his expectation. He said it would work better as a scripted, but as Mikey said on Twitter, there are dozens of those about, at least Suspects has tried to be a bit different. Rob also made a comment to me about that the actors had to be better at the improv and that was based on the first episode, as far as i'm aware, he hasn't seen any more episodes. I can imagine first episodes of this kind of structure would be a bit fraught, the cast a bit nervous and maybe to him that showed, the proof will be two or three episodes down the line when the cast have had a chance to settle down into their roles and what is expected of them. If there was a weak link in the cast, i thought it was Fay Ripley, but this was based on one episode, i found her to be a little 'soft' as a boss but perhaps in future episodes we'll see her 'harder' if you see what i mean. I thought Rob's review was a little bit unfair to be honest.
I read that overnight ratings for episode one were 903,000. That doesn't include +1 or catch up.

I loved it!!! I was gripped from beginning to end. It was a very sad story though :( usually I cannot watch stuff where children are involved but it was so good I had to watch. Damo came across as the lead, but I though Clare Ashitey was very good too!!! :D

Watched this last night. Thought I'd have a double bill, but wasn't moved enough to actually do so unfortunately.
To have the dialogue improvised seemed a gimmick to promote it. They need something to mark it out as different from every other cop show.
But it was okay. And I think it might grow on me. Run of the mill story well plotted. And I like the characters, even if Jack did come across unprofessional (swearing at the father and questioning a minor without an appropriate adult). And the improvised dialogue made it all very natural and they seemed like real coppers. I hope it gets better.

The second ep is definitely better UJ. Your thoughts about the first episode were pretty much exactly what I thought, so I watched last week's with a little trepidation, but it was a lot clearer...and just generally better.
So, when I watched this ep again I took some screencaps about those moments I liked (and which were the most memorable) and I thought I could post them here.
Pic 1. First impression. Seeing Damien again in my telly and in new role. Liked his hairstyle very much.
Pic 2. Window scene: Funny, loved it. Lots of Damien and it was interesting seeing only him in that scene. How you do impro on your own? Well this is a good example.
Pic 3. Sassy Jack. "Get in the f*****king car". After this scene I thought that Jack has short temper, and now I'm always waiting him to loose his nerves on similar situations, or not. That's the point.
Pic 4. Jack interviewing Laurie. Like I had said earlier, Damien acts with his eyes a lot; exactly scenes like this you can really admire his acting skills, he doesn't have to say much, or anything, still you know how he feels.
Pic 5. Who the boss? Interesting scene, macho Jack is showing clearly who's in charge after all, Martha.
Pic 6. Arresting Robbie. My fav scene. After this scene full of adrenalin, I have been waiting arresting scenes a lot, Jack involved of course.
Pic 7. "She may be very hurt". Those eyes speaks again thousand words, so cameraman dedicated a moment just for Jacks reaction when he heard the news.
Pic 8. Jack Interviewing Laurie. He's clearly angry, I'm waiting him to burst in flames or loose his nerves but no. Camera just zooms closer.. and closer..
Pic 10. Park scene. Other cop gives Jack Hope's shoe and after that long disturbing look, that goes on.. and on..
Pic 11. Jack smoking. First scene when you can actually know something about the characters, their personal lives and history. In Suspects they don't have much scenes where characters would talk about their feelings or anything, but in this scene there was lots of emotions in the air. Jack has give up smoking but when they found dead Hope Wilkins, he asks Charlie to give him smoke. Of course he smoke that cigarette with style, again leaning against the wall.
Pic 12. Martha showing her team leading skills. It was nice to see Charlie and Jack just nodding when she make her conclusions. Plot thickens and soon we know who's the real murderer. Martha has this calm sassy in her, liked how she pointed Jack when she said: "..not a woollen blanket" and Jack respond immediately :"She definitely said woollen."
Pic 13&14&15. Toby tells he killed his sister by accident. Jacks reaction was very intense and amazing (I went all silent during this scene, when they gave closeup shoot about Jack). And they filmed him a lot and captured all his reactions.
So that's was all, i think now I can move to analyze ep 2 Thank you about last night Jack Chat, it was fun to re-watch this ep just for that and talk about it with you (as always). And I became "Molonian" during that chat which was great!

Scene 45: 27.34-28.57
Jack is back in the interview room with Laurie
"What have you done with Hope"
"You physically and verbally abuse your son Toby, what's to say you haven't physically and verbally abused your daughter, who is now missing. Where is she Laurie"
Laurie denies all and says she must be with that "pervert who works in the off license" and why aren't the police questioning him?
Jack replies that he is in custody and they have questioned him, and he says that he called the house last night
Laurie becomes irate that they "believe a convicted child killer above the girl's father"
Jack tells him "I don't believe a word that comes out of your mouth"
Laurie becomes even more angrily and Jack raises his voice in response
"why are you stalling Laurie, why aren't you answering any of my questions I am trying to find your daughter and you're giving me nothing, ok?"
Laurie apologises and says he is stressed is trying to find his daughter too but he doesn't know where she is. Jack walks out slamming the door.

Jack and the team are still in the park. Jack calls Martha back at HQ to tell her no sign of Hope but they found a shoe and the den and a trail leading from there, but it goes dead. Martha says she will get the cctv footage for the area. when she watches, the footage shows Fiona Sullivan pulling up at and then entering the park, running back with a box and putting it in the boot of her car. She calls jack to tell him and that they are tracking Fiona's phone and she is heading to St Swithens church.
Jack and Charlie run to the car.
Scene 49: 32.38-33.54

Scene 53: 35.23-35.40
Charlie, Martha and Jack are in the main office. Charlie tells them the body is with the coroner, the box and blanket with forensics and she will take Rachel and Laurie to identify the child. Martha and Jack will go and interview "grandma".
Scene 54: 35.41-48.42

She wanted to save Hope from Laurie and put her in a blanket, and into the boot of her car to sleep but must have covered her up too tightly and it was an accident. she becomes very upset, and jack suggests a glass of water, so he and Martha can talk outside. Neither believe her story. Charlie tells them forensics show synthetic fibres were in Hopes mouth. jack reminds them Toby had said something had happened to Hope.

When she started to cry he put the covers over her face. He smashed the window to make it look like someone had broken in. He took Hope to the park. Jack is silent but looks visibly upset
Scene 58: 42.01-42.30
