5 March 2014

10pm - 11 pm

Official Synopsis

(spoilers)

As Jack and Charlie arrive at the home of Terence Holland, a former investment banker, the paramedics are about to transfer him to hospital. The terminally ill cancer patient is unconscious, and it appears that the founder of Euthanasia Action UK may have found someone to help him to die. There is no sign of a forced entry. Luckily he was found in time and should survive.

The alarm was raised by Holland’s private GP, Dr Melanie Standish. She tells the detectives that she had intended to visit him earlier, but went for a walk when she heard raised voices. She presumed that his estranged wife Henrietta was with him. When she returned and got no reply, she called for help.

During a search of the apartment, Henrietta (Rebecca Johnson, ‘The Trip’, ‘Casualty 1906-9’) is found fast asleep in the spare room. Later, she explains that she and Terence had decided to give their marriage another try. She had not argued with him, nor had she given him any morphine or any of her sleeping pills that were found in his bloodstream.

When an examination of the mug found in Holland’s kitchen indicates that it had been wiped clean of fingerprints and the residue at the bottom indicates that that was how the sleeping pills were administered, Martha concludes, “It’s looking like attempted murder.”

Although Henrietta seems to be the obvious culprit, Charlie looks into Holland’s relatives – brother Matt and his wife Jess – and Jack follows up his hunch that money may be the motive…

Scene 1: (00.00-01.09)

Newsreader voiceover:

"Reports tonight suggest that police have been called to the home of Terrence Holland. Mr Holland is terminally ill and a prominent campaigner for the right to die."

Jack arrives at the house of Terence Holland, who has just been taken away in an ambulance. suspectsep4-28.jpg

Scene 2: (01.10-01.52)

Jack talks to Dr Melanie Standish who called the police. She says she arrived at the house earlier that evening to hear what she thought was row between Terence and his wife Henrietta, who are going through a bitter divorce, so she left them to it and went for a walk. when she returned she knocked, no one answered, she couldn't hear any voices, became concerned, rang Terence's mobile got no reply and was worried so she called the police.

suspectsep4-29.jpg

Scene 3: (01.53-02.39)

Jack and Charlie are still in the house, Henrietta was found "out for the count" in the bedroom when the police arrived earlier. Jack asks forensics if they've found any "sharps" (needles), but there are none in the house. Terence has an advanced stage of cancer and could not have injected himself. Charlie says it is pretty straightforward "wife Henrietta has tried to help Terence to die".

Jack replies, "woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, don't start jumping to conclusions, that's my job"

suspectsep4-78.jpg

Scene 4: (02.40-03.31) Charlie interviews wife Henrietta at headquarters, who says they talked and Terence fell asleep, she was tired so took some sleeping pills and fell asleep about 7pm, before the row was overheard by Dr Standish.

Scene 5: (03.32-04.15)

Jack and Charlie are at their desks. Jack has info on Terence up on his computer, he set up Euthanasia UK and Dr Melanie Standish is an ardent supporter of the campaign. There were no signs of forced entry to the house, so Jack suggests they find anyone who had access, and Terence could have been rowing with, like family. Charlie has been looking for his brother Matt Holland but cannot find him, and has spoken to his wife Jess.

suspectsep4-31.jpg

Scene 6: (04.16-05.09)

Jack and Charlie interview Jess Holland at the hospital. She says Terence has been really positively lately. She has a key but that evening was at friend Edna Locks' house from about 6ish for a couple of hours. Matthew (brother/husband) was out with friends and does not know about Terence.

suspectsep4-32.jpg

Scene 7: (05.10-6.22)

Jack, Charlie are in the main office. The toxicology report show Terence suffered a morphine overdose and traces of Zopiclone (sleeping tab) were also found. Henrietta's sleeping tablets were found in the kitchen area and Terence's medication log book shows there is a vial of morphine missing from the fridge. Martha suggests they need to find out how the pills were administered. Jack has been in touch with Terence and Henrietta's solicitors, divorce papers were sent to H a month ago and she still hasn't signed them, as T is well off, could there may be a financial motive for his murder?

suspectsep4-32b.jpg

Scene 8: (06.23-07.14)

On the sleeping evidence, Jack and Charlie go to the hospital to arrest Henrietta. Jack asks Charlie if she wants to do it, she says no. Jack arrests her on suspicion of assisting a suicide, she protests and Jack says he doesn't want to have to use handcuffs, "Let's go quickly, let's go quietly".

suspectsep4-33.jpg

Scene 9: (07.15-08.49)

Jack interviews Henrietta (solicitor present) who says she hasn't signed the divorce papers because they decided to give it a go, kept it quiet to avoid outside pressure from family. Jack asks her about the sleeping pills and the argument, she claims there was no argument, they talked for a hour then she went to sleep.

"Well, we've found traces of the pills in his system. Just something for you to think about."

"You're husband has a lot of money, he's terminally ill and I think you wanna get your hands on that...."

"...You gave him sleeping pills, you knocked him out and you dosed him up to the gills with morphine ok..."

she strongly protests she would never have done that.

suspectsep4-35.jpg

Scene 10: (8.50-09.01)

Martha and Jack walk to the office, Martha asks if Jack bought Henrietta's story he replies "I can't figure out if she's genuine upset or if she's bullshitting us. Ok, but if I was a betting man, I'd say that this argument was about money".

suspectsep4-37.jpg

Scene 11: (09.02-09.55) Charlie interviews Edna in her home, who corroborates that Jess visited her last night. Charlie notices Edna's morphine, she also has cancer, and discovers that her care nurse is Matt, Terence's brother, who gives her the morphine injections.

Scene 12: (09.56-10.43)

Back at the office Charlie tells Martha that Matt is Edna's care nurse and knows how to administer morphine and that she had traced him to a casino last night but no sign of him now. Jack tells them forensics had found Terence has definitely drunk something laced with Henrietta's sleeping pills and a mug had been found with a powdery residue, from which fingerprints had been deliberately wiped off.

Martha "It doesn't sound like an assisted suicide Jack"

Jack "No, it's looking like an attempted murder"

suspectsep4-39.jpg

Scene 13: (10.44-11.02)

Martha points out that someone removed the syringe from the house, if they can identify it was Henrietta, it will "deconstruct her alibi", but Charlie reports back to Jack and Martha that sleeping tablets were found in Henrietta's system.

suspectsep4-40.jpg

Scene 14: (11.03-11.35)

Jack interviews Henrietta again, in quite an aggressive manner, pointing out the evidence of sleeping tablets in Terence's coffee cup

"You and Terrence were alone in the house, he can't walk, he can't feed himself, you had the sleeping tablets, the sleeping tablets are in his system. Explain that. "

Henrietta passionately reiterates she did not give him the sleeping pills.

suspectsep4-41.jpg

Scene 15: (11.36-12.22)

Jack has been through Terence's mobile phone history. He has made a lot of contact with the rectory at St Sebastian's church. He had a call with Dr Standish yesterday afternoon as well as a 30 min call from the fraud dept at a credit card company, who said that it was to do with a credit card that was completely maxed out with no repayments made on it, but T denied all knowledge of the card. Jack wonders if someone who has access to T's flat is defrauding him for money.

suspectsep4-42.jpg

Scene 16: (12.23-13.09)

Jack tells Charlie the credit card has solely been used for withdrawing money from ATMs and questions whether Matt and jess Holland have access to the flat, indicating his suspicion that they could be suspects now. Martha calls them n to her office to tell them Matt has been found sleeping off a hangover on a park bench.

Scene 17: (13.10-14.19)

Jack interviews Matt, who says he was at a party last night. Jack asks why he is not providing Terence with any are himself considering it is his field of work as a care nurse, Matt replies it is too much for him to take on, but his brother has the best care money can buy with a private GP

suspectsep4-44.jpg

Scene 18: (14.20-14.41) Charlie interview Jess, who seems surprised about Matt being found on a park bench and says they are saving up for a flat.

Scene 19: (14.42-15.25)

Jack has further info on Terence's bank account and financial transactions, a payment of £12,000 was made to Dr Melanie Standish after the phone call they had yesterday afternoon. Charlie questions if that is T paying her to help him end his life. Martha points out it is not enough money for a private GP, which is a highly lucrative career, but wants her movements corroborated fro last night.

suspectsep4-45.jpg

Scene 20: (15.26-16.15)

the team watch cctv footage of Dr Standish, which shows her bumping into Terence's neighbour who said she seemed tense and stressed out. Charlie makes supposition that was because she was on her way to administer a near lethal drug overdose.

suspectsep4-47.jpg

Jack points out she was the one who called the police, Charlie suggests so that she can "get in there and corrupt the crime scene". Martha advises to focus on the evidence they do have, the payment of 12,000.

suspectsep4-48.jpg

Scene 21: (16.16-16.55)

The Three detectives are in Martha's office. Martha has spoken to the hospital Terence is out of intensive care but heavily sedated. Charlie has found that Dr Standish was subject to an internal investigation 2 years ago when working at a hospital, due to filing a 'do not resuscitate' file for an elderly patient against the family's wishes.

suspectsep4-49.jpg

Scene 22: (16.56-17.43)

Jack and Charlie go to the hospital where Dr Standish works, to arrest her on suspicion of attempted assisted suicide. Jack lets Charlie make the arrest, Dr Standish protests and Jack tells her "we will cuff you if you do not go willingly".

Scene 23: (17.44-19.19)

Jack and Charlie interview Dr Standish, who says she only noticed the 12,000 deposited into her business account by Terence that morning, and that she presumes he put it there because she was angry when he put her name in the public domain, (she is trustee of his right-to-die organisation), but doesn't want the money. She reiterates the events of the previous night confirming she does have a key to T's flat, but she does not know where it is. Charlie tells her they will be searching her flat and car and Dr S is outraged, telling them when the investigation is over, "your superiors will be hearing from me".

"Am I free to leave now?

"No absolutely not, you stay where you are"

suspectsep4-51.jpg

Scene 24: (19.20-19.45)

Jack oversees the inspection of Dr S's car, when forensics find a key on the front seat.

suspectsep4-53.jpg

Scene 25: (19.46 -20.06)

Jack and Charlie briefly discuss Dr Standish having a key to the flat, and if she was helping T with an assisted suicide why would he do that knowing Henrietta was still in the flat. Jack suggest talking to Henrietta again.

suspectsep4-54.jpg

Scene 26: (20.07-20.31) Charlie interviews Henrietta, who says Terence would not have known she stayed in the flat as he fell asleep first, and she left her sleeping pills on the work surface

Scene 27: (20.32-21.03)

Jack and Charlie discuss the case again, Jack asks why would Dr S have used sleeping pills, she would have known morphine was enough to kill Terence. Martha comes in to tell them that the sole beneficiary of Terence's will is sister-in-law Jess, not brother Matt, and Dr S is the executor.

suspectsep4-55.jpg

Scene 28: (21.04-21.45) Charlie interviews Dr Standish, who tells her that Matt has a gambling habit, which is why Terence left the money to Jess in his will

Scene 29: (21.46-22.33)

Jack Charlie and Martha are in the main office. Jack has been through Matt Holland's finances, discovering he lost a lot of money yesterday at the casino. Charlie has looked at Matt and Jess's joint finances, they are struggling but have occasional injections of cash about £500 to keep them going. Jack asks if there is a match between the money being taken from Terence's credit cards and these cash injections but there is not.

suspectsep4-56.jpg

Scene 30: (22.34-24.26) Charlie interview Jess Holland, who claims she does not know that she is the sole beneficiary in Terence's will and that she and Matt were struggling. she no longer works at her old job at beauty salon 'Clearly gorgeous' they are relying on Matt's income. When asked about the cash injections in their account she claims she works on the side giving beauty treatments.

Scene 31: (24.27-25.19) Charlie interviews Edna at her home, who is a beauty client of Jess's. Edna says she pays her in cash and only £20

Scene 32: (25.20-26.32)

Charlie talks to Martha in her office, she has spoken to Jess's former employer at the beauty salon 'Clearly Gorgeous' where she did Botox treatments etc, Martha points out she knows how to use a needle. the money she earns on the side is not enough to account for the injections of cash in their bank account. Jack comes in

suspectsep4-57.jpg

Jack "Were you guys talking about me? I heard 'clearly gorgeous' "

Martha "oh.. clearly deluded"

Jack "Ok, thank you"

Jack informs Martha that the the team have looked at Terence's computer and found an email from his solicitor giving details of the will, which had been forwarded on to Matt Holland. So contrary to what Jess had told Charlie, they did know they were beneficiaries. Martha asks that they get hold of Matt again.

Scene 33: (26.33-27.37) Charlie goes to the interview room where she left Jess to find it empty

Scene 34: (26.38-27-08 )

Jack, Charlie and Martha look at footage of the interview room showing Jess making a phone call, traced to husband Matt, and leaving right after Charlie had interviewed her, telling Lee on the front desk she had to go to work, despite not having a job. Martha says they will circulate them as wanted and issue a section 8 warrant to search their flat.

On leaving the room Jack says, "Why did you let her go Charlie?"

suspectsep4-58.jpg

Scene 35: (27.09-28.08)

Charlie shows Martha cctv footage of Matt and Jess leaving their house in their car and having a row. Jack reports that their house search revealed their house was a mess and they had "definitely done a runner", and they found 3 credit cards registered to Terence, and a bank deposit book registered to Edna lock's bank account, where it is clear the money from the credit cards has been put into Edna bank account. Jack and Charlie leave in a hurry when jack receives a call that the Holland's are on their way to Edna's house.

suspectsep4-59.jpg

Scene 36: (28.09-29.25)

When Jack and Charlie arrive, they see the Holland's' car parked in the street in front of Edna's house.

suspectsep4-60.jpg

Once inside, Jack searches the house, but there is no sign of them. Edna is angry the police are at her house again and appears to start having chest pain. Jack calls for an ambulance.

suspectsep4-61.jpg

Scene 37: (29.26-30.52)

Jack and Charlie are at the hospital waiting for news on Edna, who appears to have been faking it. Jack has found out that one of the neighbours saw Jess and Matt leaving in Edna's car 5 mins before he and Charlie arrived. Charlie speaks to Edna asking her where her debit card is and when she evades the questions tells her she is obstructing a police investigation, Jack comes in to inform them someone has been tracked using Edna's debit card.

suspectsep4-61b.jpg

Scene 38: (30.53-31.35)

Jack and Charlie drive to find Matt and Jess. Spotting Edna's car and the couple walking through the park they pull over at the park's exit, but when Matt and Jess see them they run, the 2 detectives chase them, Jack arrests Jess while Charlie arrests Matt.

suspectsep4-63.jpg

Scene 39: (31.36-33.11) In interview room 3 Martha and Charlie talk to Jess who says they ran away and took Edna's car because she panicked about what Matt had done. Martha challenged her that she had the forethought to take Edna's debit card and asked about the money she has been putting in Edna's account, she replies it was Matt's winnings from the casino, so she kept it in Edna's account so he didn't spend it all.

Scene 40: (33.12-34.50)

In interview room 2, Jack and Charlie talk to Matt. Jack show him the Terence's 3 credit cards recovered from Matt and Jess's place, Matt responds he is going to pay it all back, he is a gambling addict he has a problem but he is trying to deal with it. Separate from that he claims Terence asked him to assist him in dying, and jess didn't know. He then appears to make a confession to having been at Terence's flat that night and helping with the assisted suicide attempt.

suspectsep4-65.jpg

Scene 41: (34.51-35.38)

Martha tells Jack and Charlie that she spoke to the priest Terence had been on the phone to, he had wanted to renew his marriage vows. Jack points out that does not sound like someone who is going to commit suicide and that Matt's story is looking dodgy.

Martha: "So, who's our killer guys? Matt, or Jess?"

suspectsep4-68.jpg

Scene 42: (35.39-36.41)

Jack interviews Matt again, telling him Terence was planning a ceremony, not his funeral but repeating his wedding vows. Matt seemed surprised but insisted it was him who injected Terence, while not being able to look Jack in the eye. Jack leaves the room slamming the door.

suspectsep4-69.jpg

Scene 43: (36.42-37.11)

Jack and Charlie discuss the case on the roof. Jack says Matt strikes him as "the kind of guy who doesn't really have the balls to carry this thing out". Charlie says Jess's victim story is weak Jack agrees it is BS, but the two are not going to change their stories. Charlie suggests "maybe Edna?"

suspectsep4-70.jpg

Scene 44: (37.12-37.35)

Jack has checked all routes to Edna's there are no cctv cameras, Charlie suggests the congestion charging cameras.

suspectsep4-73.jpg

Scene 45: (37.36-38.26)

Charlie and Jack speak to Martha in her office . Jess was captured on the congestion charging zone area going to Edna's house at 8pm, 2 hours later than she said meaning she has no alibi for the time Terence was injected. Martha points out it is not evidence she actually did it, she needs to be linked with the syringe, which was not found at Terence's house. Charlie suggests now Jess is a suspect, she could have hidden the syringe at Edna's house.

suspectsep4-74.jpg

Scene 46: (38.27-39.35) Charlie and a police team search Edna's house, Charlie talks to Edna who admits she lied about last night, but said Jess had only wanted to help Terence, he had asked her to. Charlie told her Jess lied as T was about to renew his vows.

Scene 47: (39.36-40.29)

Jack interviews Matt again, telling him that they are charging Jess with attempted murder. Matt says that Jess told him Terence asked him to do it. Jack becomes irate, asking why he is standing up for her, when she tried to kill him and defraud him of what could be millions. Matt said Jess had said he wasn't man enough and it was his fault.

"if she asked you jump of a fucking cliff would you do the same?"

Scene 48: (40.40-42.24) Martha and Charlie interview Jess, showing her the syringe that they found at Edna's house which ahs her fingerprints on it. Jess responds that Terence asked her to help him die, so he did, but that matt didn't know because he is weak and wouldn't have been able to go through with it and that she did not know Henrietta was in the flat at the time.

Martha: "Jess Holland, I think the only person you were really trying to help was yourself. You were stealing from your brother-in-law, he was about to find out, so you tried to kill him. You're going to prison love."

Scene 49: (42.25-end)

Jack and Charlie are on the rooftop, discussing Henrietta.

suspectsep4-77.jpg

Charlie: "I went to see Henrietta at the hospital. "

Jack: "yeah?"

Charlie: "I really nearly let slip about Terrence wanting to renew their vows. I just, I felt like we really put her through the mill last night and today. I wanted to have some good news."

Jack: "like we put her through the mill, or you really put her through the mill?

Charlie: "What's that supposed to mean? what's that supposed to mean?"

Jack: "You had her in your eye line from the get-go."

Charlie: "May I remind you that you very much took my Henrietta bone and ran with it."

Jack: "My granny used to always say, "Don't ever let me rot away in a nursing home, put me out of my misery before it gets that way." "

Charlie: "It's such a hard decision."

Jack: "It's getting old man. No-one wants to get old. Listen, I'll buy you a pint.

Charlie: "You're going to buy me a pint? "

Jack: "Yeah."

Charlie: "I will take that."

I'm finding that i'm enjoying this series more as it progresses. I think that's been made able because now we're familiar with the format and getting to know the characters.

Again i found tonight's episode absorbing and interesting and after a while, i think for the first time this series, i actually forgot that it's mostly improvised and just got lost in the storyline, wondering whodunnit. I love crime dramas as a rule and usually i'll try and guess the culprit but in this show, i don't, i just let the story unfold.

Again this was the Jack and Charlie show, Damien and Clare have such a terrific, natural chemistry and it just flows between them. Damien seemed very comfortable in his role in tonight's episode and the 'clearly gorgeous' quip made me laugh out loud and i imagined Twitter having a lot of fun with that quip (and they did)

Excellent episode and i think yet again, the weakest link for me is Fay Ripley but i think it could be down to the fact that she isn't in it as much as Damien and Clare are. I like Martha's character but i like Jack's forceful confidence as well as Charlie's growing confidence (perhaps under Jack's careful guidance)

This show really and absolutely works with a partly improvised script and i'm so glad, given a past attempt at this format failed miserably last year. I think having a stellar trio in the lead roles helps.

Agree with you Lisa, Jack and Charlie stole the show this week! Love how Jack chastises Charlie for jumping to conclusions (he did last week too ) but then goes on to jump to conclusions! His sassy, passionate attitude is very compelling to watch.

Quote of the episode:

""Were you guys talking about me? I heard 'clearly gorgeous'"

I think this is the best one yet as far as seeing Damien is concerned! Some of the crticisms of the programme have been with the sound. This time all the dialogue was perfectly audible.

Loved it!

agree! The sparring between the three was a bit less, but the Jack and Charlie 'rivalry' continues... Charlie is a skilled clue finder and they make a great team, but does Jack feel a little... threatened by that do we think? He seemd to pull rank bit last night!

Again the very brief non policing moments of dialogue were made all the more fascinating, in terms of the characters personalities and relationship to each other, like the bit where Jack offered to buy Charlie a pint!

and just me or was the thudometer off the scale last night?

(doing the screencaps was a real joy!! thud)

I think he broke the thud-ometer last night.
In the last two episodes we've had 'kiss kiss kiss' & 'clearly gorgeous' improvised. Can't deny the man knows how to work his audience.
The series keeps getting better with each episode although I'm not sure if real police would get away with some their questioning techniques & language used.

"broke the thud-ometer" haha! YES! approved

Yeah I find those lines intriguing, last night's one was directed at Martha I fetl an her reaction "clearly deluded" was hilarious and after the "Who you are f**king" line last week I wondered about whether the three actors decided to chuck in those almost the flirtatious elements..it is just banter but .... I could very easily creata a whole fan fic around how Martha secretly has the hots for jack but likes to be exspecially harsh to him because of it and he knows it...

Lol, perhaps a bit of artistic license, but what do i know about police techniques and procedure? and they did have a real police person there at all times advising so who knows! I didn't think their interveiwing techniques were unrealistic at all, Jack has his methods for extracting the truth and they vary, I like it!

I'm hearing a rumour guys, that Channel Five are pulling 'Suspects' after next week's episode, for a 'mid season break'

On the one hand, while the ratings for Suspects seem to be steady (it got 900k for its first episode and has been just over 600k for subsequent episodes, don't know yet what last night's got), apparently it isn't doing as well as hoped. I'm thinking perhaps they're yanking it from its slot to find a more suitable one and if that's the case, we may not see part two for a while. Or alternatively, and more cynically perhaps, because it's not doing as well as hoped and that they have to honour the episodes, they'll stick it in a graveyard slot and let it die a quiet death and therefore will not recommission (and if that's indeed the case, shame on them) I've tweeted them to ask whether the 'mid season break' angle is true. Who knows whether they'll respond.

BUT they have a history of doing this, they seem incapable of committing to a show for a full series run unless it's a bona fide slot winner for them (ie NCIS etc), they seem almost schizophrenic in this respect, showing so many episodes of a series then pulling it for the 'mid season break', putting something else in its slot and the viewer is left waiting for weeks for the series to resume. I'm such a viewer, they began showing series two of the excellent 'Person of Interest' back in October, yanked it for Christmas and i'm STILL waiting for it to resume, even though series three is airing in the US, so it's nothing to do with catching up with the US audiences...and they wonder why some folk find other means to see the shows with this kind of behaviour.

So i'm cautiously hopeful we'll not have a long wait to see the remaining series of 'Suspects', i can't help but feel a little bit sceptical (and a whole lot annoyed at channel five and their cavalier behaviour!!)

Lisa, we have been talking about it in the chat box for the past hour.... ? keeping it off the forum until confirmed, it was only a comment on digital spy forums, until it is officially mentioned, it remains just that.

I have to say I disagree re the sound this week - found it quite mumbly at times, mainly Damien actually, so it affected my enjoyment of the episode.

Thought it was another good storyline though and, again, couldn't work out exactly who had done what which is great. Particularly liked the old lady and her fake chest pains, lol.

PS Hair needs cutting, wasn't doing it for me!

Loved the ending! I think this was best episode from all so far. It was very intense and fast forward going than others. The old lady was great. I think every episode is going to be unique and different. So, can't wait for the next one!

There are some wonderful screencaps there, domino!

Unfortunately, even though I watched this on ch5...and then again on +1, I still haven't got to see it all the way through uninterrupted.  So I'll reserve judgement until I have.

......and Kat - just leave the hair alone!

Nope. You're all wrong, lol. Messy on top is fine, but straggly at the back is a no-no. Trim required now!

I forgot to mention earlier that I really like Fay in this episode. It's increasingly obvious that she is not supposed to be the lead - it's Damien and Claire-Hope sharing it - but she's using her time on screen better; more how I would expect a boss to be.
