Damien returns to the stage!

No Man's Land

Exciting news Molonians, Our favourite actor is soon to return to the stage in a masterpiece with master actors!

Damien has been announced as cast in No Man’s Land, appearing alongside Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen.

The production is directed by Sean Mathias and is heading to the UK in August 2016 following a hit run on Broadway.

Written by nobel prize winner Harold Pinter in 1974, the play features four main characters: Spooner and Hirst, played by Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart respectively, Foster, who Damien will be playing, with Owen Teale rounding out the cast as Briggs.

The exciting news was announced on the No Man’s Land Twitter page today.





The official No Man’s Land website gives a synopsis for the upcoming production.

One summer’s evening, two ageing writers, Hirst and Spooner, meet in a Hampstead pub and continue their drinking into the night at Hirst’s stately house nearby. As the pair become increasingly inebriated, and their stories increasingly unbelievable, the lively conversation soon turns into a revealing power game, further complicated by the return home of two sinister younger men. NoMansLandPlay.com

No Man’s Land will tour across four venues before reaching London for a 14 week run, opening at the Lyceum theatre, Sheffield, on 3 – 13 August, at Theatre Royal, Newcastle, from 15 -20 August, at Theatre Royal, Brighton, from 22 – 27 August and New theatre, Cardiff, from 29 August – 3 September. The London run is at Wyndham’s theatre, London, from 8 September – 17 December.

Damien’s acting talent has delighted audiences in an incredible range of projects across his career, in television, film, radio and theatre. He last appeared on stage in National Theatre Tom Stoppard production The Hard Problem early 2015. We are thrilled he is returning to ‘tread the boards’ this year in Pinter’s comic masterpiece, “one of the most brilliantly entertaining plays”, and could not be more excited for him to appear alongside two of acting’s finest legends.

It appears the New Theatre, Cardiff have removed their tweet - perhaps another announcement is imminent, regarding the entire run. not just Cardiff? Watch this space!

OMG!!

I tried to get tickets for me and my daughter to see this in London....but all the (affordable) tickets had already sold for sale dates that we could make.  I had no idea it was going to on in cardiff!

I have a ticket for a date in the Newcastle week, whether Damien is touring with the play or not (am thinking it's highly likely, just playing Cardiff would be odd considering Sir Ian, Sir Patrick and Owen Teale are playing the Newcastle dates), i remember reading about this in the Newcastle Theatre Royal brochure a month or so ago and being intrigued then and today's announcement gave me further impetus. I could only get a seat in the nosebleed seats for the Saturday matinee, there was nothing suitable available during the rest of the run (and i checked and my husband, who is on night shift that week offered to go into work an hour later on whatever night if i were able to get a ticket through the week) so i was pleased to get what i got and no, it wasn't cheap, even for a nosebleed seat but my lovely husband told me i deserved a treat so the ticket is booked and i'm quietly excited. Sir Ian and Sir Patrick on stage TOGETHER!! with added Owen and Damien.

Owen Teale is listed as playing a character called (i think) Briggsy? so i'm thinking Damien is cast at the other young man (Sir Ian and Sir Patrick are the two leads and there are two other younger characters, i'm assuming Damien is young man no.2)

I knew the tickets would sell very quickly with the two leads already announced. Just pleased that they're coming to Newcastle.

Harold Pinter's 'No Man's Land' is a 4 man play, the two older characters are Hirst and Spooner, the two younger are Briggs and Foster (Jack), who Damien has to be playing. It is the first play Damien has been in that I have known before him appearing in it (apart from 'Tis Pity). The UK tour begins in August, but the London dates, despite being called a limited season, run until mid December!

I am tempted to agree that Damien will be appearing across the full run Lisa, perhaps that is why the New Theatre Cardiff removed their tweet as it may have been only partial information, but wary of suggesting anything until a central official announcement has been made.

This is incredibly exciting news! Damien in a play with some amazing actors! We've been waiting to hear whether Damo will be doing theatre this year as he seems to have done a play every year so this is fab news.

I agree, if (and when) his casting is officially confirmed, it will be a tremendous feather in his cap, working with two absolute legends and Owen Teale is also extremely talented (I believe he's in Game of Thrones right now, i know him from various roles but he did appear in a Catherine Cookson drama thingie a fair while back, i want to say The Fifteen Streets). It will look fantastic on his CV.

It would make sense for him to appear in the role across all of the dates (and the first tour he's undertaken since Travelling Light, i know TBOA went between two theatres) but we shall see what is announced. He was the impetus for me to purchase a ticket but if he doesn't do the rest of the tour then that's fine, it's an amazing cast all around. Let's see what is announced :)

 I think I was only looking at Saturday matinees....that's really all we could both do.  If I'd known it was on in Cardiff I would've already booked us tickets there (it's only about an hours drive away).....so I have now smile  I'm pretty excited whether Damien's in it or not - Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart!! - so if Damien's in it too that'll just be the cherry on top!

Fifi, I did exactly the same - looked at Saturday matinees - but thought they were a bit pricey. I think a trip to Sheffield may well be in my future now, as you say Damo is just the cherry on top.

OMG - I've just booked for this, the Thursday matinee performance in Newcastle! Wonderful to see Damien in it - I can't see them changing the cast from one performance to another. I thought it was a strong cast before but the thought of seeing Damien as well is great. That's my entertainment money for the year gone now, by the way - the tickets cost a leg and an arm and I'd already booked up for the Ring Cycle at the Sage in Gateshead. Still, I will always be able to stretch to see Damien.

Good to see everyone booking tickets, it does seem likely Damien will be appearing for the whole run but just to say again though, until this is officially announced, we cannot be sure! Fingers crossed that announcement comes soon.

Seriously, I'm absolutely thrilled that Damien is in this production, acting with those stalwarts of the stage. I haven't seen Patrick Stewart live before, but I've seen Ian McKellen  a few times and he has a wonderful stage presence! I can hardly wait! Damien is marvellous on stage and he can add so much to this.

There's a huge difference between acting on stage and screen. I've seen some famous screen actors become totally bland on the stage, no personality at all, which was a shock. It takes a special actor to be good on stage and screen - and Damien definitely is that!

 I've a ticket for the Saturday matinee at the Theatre Royal, because of my husband's shifts, I couldn't do matinees through the week and those tickets are expensive aren't they, and I'm in the upper circle!! This will be the second time ive seen Damien on stage in Newcastle and the third time overall. So pleased it's been confirmed and I'm so excited now! :)

What fabulous news is this!!  VERY FABULOUS NEWS!  I already have a ticket because Sirs Patrick Stwart & Ian McKellen folks!!  However, when tickets went on sale I was ludicrously broke (as always) thus my seat is a £10 one, up in THE SKY, essentially!  For a matinee in December.  I am even more excited now I know Damien will be in it too!  I wish it was coming anywhere near me in it's tour.  Truly wonderful that it is touring the country though and I think AMAZING that such big names are going on tour..... but... THE NORTH WEST DOES EXIST... Just saying... heeee!  I think Sir Ian McKellen is even from the North West... you know you want to add a few dates over here... teeheehee... If only!  How exciting in any case!  I am going to the matinee on 3rd December.  :)

I can report though, due to the seat which is mine, that though prices for some seats are very expensive indeed, there also exist seats that are £10 (with no booking fee on top of this even!) for the London shows.  You couldn't even go to the cinema in London for that price!  Thus, yay!  'Tis theatre for everyone.  *Happy Dance*

 Littleimpulse,  I started to go to the theatre when I was a child, my mam used to take me up in 'the gods' every week.  It got so that if the doormman spotted us in the queue he would wave us to the front. I have seen some amazing actors and actresses going way back (many totally unheard of now). Now I'm older and can afford better seats, but having spent all my spare dosh now this year on theatre and concert tickets, thank you for reminding me that 'the gods' still exist and are affordable. The last thing I saw from up there was the Mikado, about twenty years ago.

I do wish I still had my autograph books, don't know what happened to them.
