6 days and counting!

Suspects is on TV & Satellite's Hotlist of 28 best TV shows this week!

Wonder who has been withholding information..... (oh Jack what have you done..)

suspects5ep1tvsat.png

Unlike the totally Jack-centric trailer and epic preview clip, the TV guides for episode 1 are focussing on Martha's disappearance, and in my opinion, rightly so ...

The Radio Times already has a review for this episode, which is quite revealing!

by David Butcher
I’ve got a soft spot for this stripped-back, semi-improvised cop show. It’s like a lobster bought from Lidl: not the very finest fare but classy considering what it costs.

For series five the no-frills procedural has taken on new cast members, including James Murray as a straight-arrow DCI who wastes no time in annoying his staff, notably loose cannon DC, Jack Weston.

Lenora Crichlow also joins as an empathetic DS and slips nicely into the Suspects modus operandi of rattled-out dialogue, rushed scenes, shaky cameras and so on. Plus there’s light relief from a stolid new DC called Gary (This Is England's Perry Fitzpatrick).

But the bigger news is the cast member who is absent: Fay Ripley has left (to film the new Cold Feet) and her absence is accounted for in fairly brutal fashion as the episode opens. “Just go gently,” Jack’s new boss tells him, but that has never been his style.

The RT episode synopsis, as with all the TV guides, is also more spoilery than the official Ch 5 one:

DS Charlie Steele must keep DS Jack Weston under control as they investigate the murder of a detective inspector, who has been shot dead in her bed. DCI Daniel Drummond heads the investigation, bringing in DS Alisha Brooks and DC Gary Roscoe from Major Crimes to help, but there is shock in store when it turns out one of the detectives knows more about the murder than they are letting on.

"one of the detectives knows more about the murder than they are letting on."
Wonder who that could be?!

Best description of the show I've come across so far. Amazing! All this build up, can't believe it's tomorrow we have the first episode.

I know people are going to disagree with me but here it goes...

I decided on "Good, quality drama." on the poll. However I almost gave it a lousy "It was Ok"
But I felt I couldn't let my general interests for TV show's cloud the fact that this show for what it is, as a drama cop show, is very good.
It has definitely become more bearable, I personally think the filming style has adjusted just a little making it better since last series. And it's very possible that after I've re-watched the episode my views will change and I'll slowly fall in love with it.

And whilst I understand the whole authentic. I have two points which just make me want to turn it off.
- Once or twice I felt there was too many people talking at once.
- My dislike for the filming style just makes me feel like I'm watching a documentary. But it's a good documentary.

However, I did enjoy it. (Believe it or not, ahaha.) And I will be continuing to watch the series if nothing else than to support Damien. But it did have moments that I enjoyed. smile

So intense!! The new characters add extra depth and we get to see Jack and Charlie from other people's point of view. The glimpses into Jack's past were very interesting (hopefully we'll see how that develops through the series). And the ending - OMG!!

The pace and storyline was so deliciously full on I feel giddy with adrenaline! the deeper emphasis on Jack already in the 6 part series is totally thrilling. Perhaps it is because so much has been held back about the detectives and now we're being let in a little it feels such a treat. It's like slowly unfolding a long term suspense.

All elements of the story were shocking and gripping in equal measure and very cleverly intertwined.

The new cast fit in seamlessly already, and I must admit to being nervous about the new faces joining. When the action split between the two sergeants and Lenora's Alisha was being called 'Sarge' I had a blip of worry that we'd see less of Jack (who is the only Sarge to us so far!) But as things progressed, he was the central figure to it all.

Loving Perry Fitzpatrick and the new TDC, and cannot wait to see where the DCI Drummond story goes (gasp!)

OMG - that was intense! Shock ending, too!

I watched it twice, just to get everything straight in my head. Jack has definitely been set up - he's signed for that gun, after all. I rather think he would have been manipulated anyhow - my feeling is that Drummond tipped Mo off about the gun after Jack told everyone about the cartridges being dropped down the drain. Luckily for them, Jack's past and his links to Rose made him vulnerable.

I think the new characters have all fitted in well, found I didn't miss Martha at all. I'm glad there was still the documentary air about it (sorry, Bill-Alexander). A friend of mine had insisted that this is the last series with Jack and Charlie, something she'd heard on Twitter, apparently, and I had been really concerned about that but find I'm relaxing a bit about it now as it doesn't seem so likely now.

My only niggles are Jack and Charlie being in the investigation team (would they be - surely these days they would need a psych evaluation first, especially Jack, as he found the body) and the totally different Irish accents of Jack and Rose, who were supposed to be going out with each other while still aged 15. Yes, I know it doesn't stop them having lived beside one another as people move but for me it's like being told that a Geordie and a Liverpudlian grew up next door.

I can hardly wait for next week (and, naturally, am wondering who the father of Rose's daughter is).

My first reaction was......I need to watch that again!  I'm not sure I've felt an immediate urge to rewatch an episode as soon as it finished before.....I guess because the story mostly finished at the end of the episode.  I haven't rewatched yet so I'll probably have more to say once I have.

But I'm loving all of the tweeks they've given the format!  It still retains all of the immediacy, pace and twists which it had before, but the extended cast have definitely shaken up the dynamic - in a good way.  Sooooo goood to see Damien and Lenora together again!  Although - perhaps surprisingly - I didn't find myself thinking of Hal and Annie once it got started at all!   I agree Ellie - it's almost strange how Martha's absence wasn't more noticeable - maybe just because it all happened so fast!  It's brilliant to finally get to see more of the characters behind the cops.  I think domino's right - it's probably made even more special because we've already got to know them in their professional lives....makes it feel like a real treat!

Interesting what you said about this being the last series with Jack and Charlie though Ellie....I'm glad it seems unlikely to you, because I did find myself musing/stressing over the though myself earlier....

I'll be back when I've had a rewatch....
