MOLONY MOMENTS 2017!

Here in DaMo Land, 2017 gave us...

 King Lear

and

GameFace!

gamefacereview1.jpg

At the end of each year I usually do a DMF 'Top Ten Molony Moments'. But for me and many who were unable to see king Lear, 2017 was largely about GameFace, and I cannot possibly top the Top Ten Damien Molony Moments in my GameFace review!

Having said that,  there have been a couple of other amazing 2017 moments that have brought great joy.

Firstly, with Damien's help and the support of you wonderful forumers, for which I am personally hugely grateful, we raised money for Age UK in the DMF King Lear Christmas Charity Prize Draw

Secondly, Damien and Roisin Conaty loved the DMF Christmas card!

Oh and last of all ... I nearly forgot ()  ...When Damien sent me the signed King Lear programme for the fundraiser, he also sent me my own personal copy signed by him and all of the cast! (squee!)

What were your Molony Moments of 2017?

I couldn't resist doing a proper top ten Molony Moments. So here we are!

Molony Moments 2017

It has been another wonderful year for us Damien fans, with our fave actor appearing on stage, screen and radio, and continuing to make a difference, by donating blood and supporting important charities.

Here are our top ten Molony Moments of 2017!

1. Damien’s Blood Donation Campaign

Damien continued his commitment to ‘save a life’ and ‘give blood’ in 2017. He made two donations this year, on 17 February and 28 August while continuing to inspire others to do the same.

2. Bottle Man BBC Radio 4
On 27 February Damien returned to BBC Radio 4 reading darkly comic tale Bottle Man by Nicole Flattery, part of a series of specially commissioned short stories celebrating the work of Ireland’s most exciting writers. Our fave actor delivered a unmissable and enthralling performance. (And The Soundhouse Studio gave us a treat of a photo below.)

4. The Current War
On 5 March Damien revealed via his Spotlight page that he would be appearing as the character Bourke Cockran in The Current War. Based in historical fact, we were thrilled at the prospect of our fave actor appearing in a period drama and had fun researching the figure he would be playing. The film world premiered at Toronto International Film festival, but the theatrical released was delayed due to revelations later in the year about the Weinstein Company. Despite the shadow cast over the whole project, we very much hope to see Damien in the film in 2018.

3. Doctor Who
Damien was once again a forerunner in the favourites to play the next Doctor Who, with show writer and Being human creator Toby Whithouse naming him as his top choice on 20 March. While he will not be playing the next Doctor, our fave actor was also a huge favourite in the press and the overwhelming support from him in following months was an exciting time.

5. ‘GameFace’ Casting
Thrilling news came on 21 March, when Damien was announced as cast in Roisin Conaty’s brand new comedy GameFace. First epic behind the scenes photos of Damien and Roisin Conaty gave us a tantalising glimpse at what was to come!

6. ‘King Lear’ Casting
Even more thrilling news arrived 20 July, when Damien was announced as cast in Chichester Festival Theatre production King Lear. The play had a limited run from 22 September to 28 October, when our fave actor once again appeared on stage with the legendary Sir Ian McKellen, alongside an incredible cast, including former crashing co-star Jonathan Bailey.

7. Doodle Day
Damien continued to support important charities in 2017, taking part in a celebrity auction for Epilepsy Action’s National Doodle Day 22 September.

8. ‘GameFace’ Series 1
Damien returned to our TV screens in 2017 in GameFace series 1. The six episode series was a delightful weekly treat From the 12 October – 9 November on E4. His character Jon proved to be one our favourites yet, and Roisin Conaty’s comedy – a brilliantly written, hilarious gem of a moreish comedy, with an all-star cast – was our highlight of the year. Read the DMF review with our top ten Damien ‘GameFace’ moments here!

9. ‘The Effect’ and ‘Tis Pity She’s A Whore’ radio plays coming soon!
In December we were truly excited to learn Damien will be appearing in two Drama on 3 radio productions in the new Year. Playing the male lead in both, alongside Jessie Buckley, the first is a radio production of John Ford play Tis Pity She’s A Whore, which airs Sunday 7 January 2018. This will not be the first time Damien has played Giovanni, having appeared in the stage production at West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2011 (where incidentally he was noticed by a casting director for his role as Hal in Being Human). The following Sunday 14 January Damien stars as Tristan Frey in the first radio production ever of Lucy Prebble’s award-winning play The Effect.

10. DMF & Damien ‘King Lear Christmas Charity Prize Draw’ for Age UK
With Damien’s generous help, we were once again able raise money for an important charity this year. Damien donated a rare prise for us to give away in the DMF & Damien Molony King Lear Christmas Charity Prize Draw – a King Lear programme signed by him and every single cast member, including Sir Ian McKellen!

The draw ran from 27 November – 17 December and we managed to fundraise £445 for Age UK. Huge thanks to Damien, the cast of King Lear and all the wonderful fans who took part.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There were many other Molony Moments of the year, and trying to keep it to a top ten is no easy thing. So, please allow me to take a liberty, and add one more.
Damien’s Christmas card
Lastly but by no means leastly, Damien (and Roisin Conaty!) loved the DMF GameFace inspired Christmas card, and your humble webmistress’s year was made.
Thank you to all readers and fellow Molonians everywhere for sharing another ‘year of the DaMo’ with us. And thank you to Damien, who continues to share his sparkling talent for us all to enjoy.
Here’s to 2018. Happy New Year!
What were your Molony Moments?!?
I didn't get to see King Lear either but I loved seeing all the photos of the rehearsals and the production and to read the reviews and experiences of the lucky forumers who did get to see it. I love that Damien still loves his theatre work.
It was wonderful to see the fundraiser raise so much money for Age UK and for Damien to support it.
Game Face was a real highlight. Damien played Jon with the subtlety and depth that we expect but with some surprising moments of absolute delight most of which involved singing! Fingers very much crossed for another series!
It was lovely to see some new people joining the forum in 2017 too.
Well said Rosie! SO happy that several lovely forumers were part of the select few who managed to see King Lear - some of whom met the man himself! That has to be the ultimate Molony moment!
And you are right, thank you to all the newbies who joined us here in DaMo land in 2017. And to those who are still on the journey with us from yestertimes. grouphug
I'm totally keeping everything crossed for a GameFace series 2 announcement next year, and that we can add that to our Molony Moments of 2018! fingerscrossed
That's a great lineup of moments, domino. biggrin
For me, clearly, the top moment, as you said, was that I met him myself after seeing King Lear.
But I did not discover Damien until 2017 and had all his past projects in front of me, so I had many top moments last year.
Also, I have done many things last year that I would not have done normally and that I found great. (For example: Watch English series in original sound, watch an English theatre play in the cinema, I would never have watched the movie Tiger Raid, travel to Chichester to the theater and, first time I did the dishes with Marigolds biggrin)
And now I'm very curious what to expect in 2018
 This is awesome Sana. Especially the part about your new experiences that have come about tangentially through being a Damien fan!
Thank you for reminding me that is true for me too - perhaps in a different way, but running a website(s) has brought me great experiences that are not related to Damien's work, and I've learned new skills and met lovely people, including all you lovely forumers!
Yes, fingers crossed. I think it would be good if something new is coming. But since I liked Gameface so much, another series would be great .. biggrinbiggrin
Thank you Sana, yes our fave actor has always been hugely generous with fans and the forum, and me!
But the thing I am most grateful for is his support in the DMF charity fundraisers. His generosity with signed items and his own personal mementos from his project he has enabled me, via the forum, to make a small difference to important causes. I am unable to give blood or physical challenges to raise money for charity, but with his help and the support of all you wonderful fans especially you forumers,  have been able to support charities four years running!
For anyone interested, here is a new topic on Damien & the forum charity fundraisers
Lovely roundup Domino! Like Sana, I had lots to catch up with having discovered DaMo’s work late so watching Clean Break, Suspects, Tiger Raid as well as having the new projects. Winning the signed programme was the cherry on the amount raised in the fundraiser, too :)
Maghat, you and Sana had the best year with the whole of Damien's catalogue to catch up on! Hope you included Being Human, Ripper Street, Crashing, Kill Your Friends, his audio book Raven and all his radio readings too?
Congrats again on winning the programme, a truly special thing!
I have to admit, I actually watched everything. But especially the series Being human and Suspects were so exciting that I almost could not stop watching...
Being Human was how I found DaMo. I did do Crashing and, I think, all the radio stuff last year. Ripper Street, Kill Your Friends and Raven are still in my future :)
Bit late coming to this but.....that's a great list domino!  2017 was a much busier year for Damien than it seemed!
It'll be no surprise that my top moment was King Lear.  I'd totally resigned myself to not having a ticket (not) But I was so disappointed because knowing that he'd played Edmund before I'd always wished i could've seen it - and then suddenly I'd only got a couple of weeks before i was actually going to see it - and not only that, but with such a cast!  I've not been so excited since my first trip to see him in London. And it was such an amazing production, such an intimate experience - I feel very privilaged to have seen it (if it does transfer to london it'll be interesting to see where it ends up....)  So I now don't know if The Body of an American, or King Lear is my favorite damo theatre production.
Actually going to the theatre alone was a novel experience for me....but nowhere near as 'novel' as stage dooring Damien by myself (I've always hung around at the back of a group - I don't think I really believed i'd ever do it alone!!) I didn't exactly chat, but i did speak....i think!!!  And it was such a lovely surprise to discover that my husband had arrived in time to snap a photo!!
To top it off, I then spent a fantastic weekend in Chichester with my husband - a proper grown up weekend, without any children, or even the dog.... smile
Number 2 is Gameface....which turned out to be even better than i thought it would be.  And there is never enough damo on my tellybox! Much as I'd like to see Damien do some more serious tv drama, I'm equally happy to have another series of Gameface in 2018..... fingerscrossed
And I think number 3 is probably the prize draw.  I love the forum fundraisers (it give me a warm fuzzy feeling that, as a community, we raise money for charity - although Domino does all of the hard work, of course!) and it's always lovely that Damien is prepared to donate something - getting the whole cast to sign the programme was a really lovely and supportive gesture, as was adding the fundraiser page to his insta bio. And getting a second programme signed for our lovely domino - so deserved - just makes me love him even more biggrin
It sounds like Damien fandom gave you new experiences tangentially last year too fifi! Really happy for you and your King Lear experience. Could it have bene more perfect?
And... No reason why Damien can't be in a serious drama and another series of GameFace this year fingerscrossed
