Lots of new GameFace 2 goodies are here!

Here's a lovely, must-read interview with Roisin C ahead of the new series. She's so brill and funny!

GameFace series 2: Interview with writer, creator and star Roisin Conaty

Game Face is back for series two. For those who missed it (and might want to watch it on All 4) what is the show about?

It’s about Marcella, a struggling actress who starts to see a lifecoach, she is heartbroken because Simon, her partner of 12 years, married someone else two weeks after they’ve split up.

Where do we pick things up in season 2?

We pick it up pretty much from the end of season one. It’s not much later, just a few weeks. Marcella is taking her driving test, and gets herself into a bit of a situation. It picks up her relationship with Jon [her driving instructor] she’s working at the London Dungeon, and desperately trying to move on with her career. Meanwhile Simon her ex has moved in with her mum, and is going to be living with her brother. So her ex is very much still in play. It’s an interesting family dynamic and, as usual, Marcella’s impulses are getting her into trouble.

How did you find writing series two? Was it easier, because you had all the characters established, or the more difficult ‘second album’ syndrome?

A bit of both, I think. It’s easier in that whenever you get those “I can’t do it” moments, there’s evidence that you can, in the form of a series. You’ve been there before, you got through it, and it worked out okay. But there is also the challenge of trying to move it on in a believable way, and make it interesting and surprising

It’s got a great cast – did you manage to get everyone back for series 2?

I have, yeah. I was so pleased, everyone’s really brilliant. They’re such an amazing cast, and so enjoyable to watch. Once you’ve performed with them, it’s easier to write for them, you know their cadences, and you know much more how to write for each character. So that becomes easier.

Are there any new characters prominent in this series?

Yes. The therapist now has a student called Frances, who is very young and earnest and doesn’t like the chaotic sessions where Marcella’s not really trying to help herself and he’s not trying to help Marcella. So she’s trying to bring a bit of order to it, and actually does.

Do you like performing your own sitcom, or is it too stressful to actually enjoy?

I love it, getting the chance to write and perform your own stuff, with a huge team of people creating that world for you, is truly magical. You might have casually written down “She’s drinking a Tizer” and the art department have gone out and started panicking “Oh my God, Tizer doesn’t exist anymore.” It’s mad, a whole production going through these scripts making them happen. I really enjoy it. The characters are all my babies, and I feel protective of them all. There’s nothing like watching it all come together in an edit, and thinking “Oh my God, this thing that I wrote in my pyjamas now seems real.”

You are executive producer on the show as well as writing and starring. Does it ever feel like too much?

I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t true. It’s an ambitious show, I write very visual scenes, and we want the show to look amazing, so that means time is always hard, we’re always chasing our tail because it’s not just all set in a house. There’s loads of locations. And midway through a shoot a location might fall through, and I’m across all the decisions, so if a location falls through or we have to move a scene, I’m involved in that. I have to be really focussed, and whenever you’re extraordinarily focussed, you’re not really having fun. You’re making decisions all through the day. That’s not exactly enjoyable, but I love it. At the end you can enjoy it. It’s very hard work. It’s hard to enjoy that pressure, but you just have to thrive off it.

Marcella seems to have a problem being serious – she makes jokes all the time, sometimes in inappropriate situations. Is that something you can relate to?

Yeah. I think with someone like Jon, Marcella is quite scared of opening up again after the Simon relationship, so they dance around each other making jokes. I think it’s quite sweet. I’d say I’m more direct than Marcella, but I get the whole thing about making jokes. That’s my natural disposition. If something’s awful, I find it funny. If something’s funny, I find it funny. It’s my natural, go-to place.

She’s incredibly resilient, and fundamentally pretty strong. Do you admire her?

Oh yeah, I love her. I think she’s got blind spots about her actual flaws which is frustrating sometimes but I think that’s like all of us. She makes things more difficult than they need to be sometimes, but I think she’s an optimist, and I think she’s got a life in her head that she really wants, and she’s trying to push herself to. Her impulses let her down, but I do admire her...

Received wisdom has it that happiness isn’t funny. Do you feel you have to keep Marcella struggling a little bit? Is that frustrating?

I’m not sure that happiness isn’t funny. There are happy scenes in it. She enjoys her friends. But I guess life isn’t always happy, in one day you can feel 50 emotions, so I just want the show to be truthful. I think the constant being told that we should all be happy is making us all unhappy, I don’t think it’s a healthy thing. It’s good to accept that life can sometimes be hard. But she gets wins in this series.

Have you learned to drive yet?

Nope, I still can’t. I’m going to learn to drive an automatic. Forget about learning ‘stick’ as they say in the States.

Were you tempted to have lessons as research for this?

Oh I’ve had lessons, mate! I have lessons galore! I’ve had more driving instructors than I can count. I’ve had lessons, don’t you worry!

Is it true that the show went out on Hulu in America? What’s that like?

Yeah. It was really lovely, the reaction to it was really nice. It wasn’t a huge show over there, but people who liked it really, really liked it. I have tried to write truthful characters, so it shouldn’t matter where you’re from. I watch stuff from all around the world. We all grow up watching American TV, so the idea that I might have teenage American girls watching my show is kind of funny!

When do you get most nervous? Before filming, before the previews, before it transmits?

This is the thing, I don’t really have much middle ground. Everything is a ten. There’s not one bit where I feel like it’s easier. The script bit I’m in hell, then when you start filming its really high stakes, can we cut it together, does it make sense? Then in the edit, then first week of rushes is so nerve-wracking, I couldn’t watch it for four days because I was so frightened. I wish there was one bit I took lightly, but I’m always all over everything, trying to make it okay.

How do you find watching yourself?

It’s really awful, actually. It’s not so bad in the edit, I’ve got used to that now, but at the screening was weird. It’s really unnatural to be in a room full of people watching you on screen. It’s exposing. Your little imaginary world is up on screen. They can see what I’ve been thinking about! It’s very odd.

A great interview with Roisin. She is so funny, but also exactly to the point. But not too much like other Comedians (I hope you know what I mean)

I know exactly what you mean, Sana. Roisin is a unique talent!

It's a great interview and really interesting to read how Roisin views Marcella. It's funny how she thinks of Marcella in the same way we were discussing her at the re-watch chats.

Marcella reminds me of me when in was young - everything tailored to how others saw me! In actual fact, I was totally wrong and would have had a much better life had I just done what I wanted rather than I thought I should (if that make sense).

Agree with you all - think it's obvious by now I properly rate Roisin Conaty. She's a hugely talented and genuine human it seems to me. Plus, she is a Damien fan herself right? (she has to be!)

Did you all spot in her interview that series 2 begins right after series 1 - just a few weeks later?

Thanks for the heads up about TV Choice Rosie!

GameFace gets a recommendation in the Telegraph too! Nooo I don't want Marcella to be torn between Jon and Simon (bloody Simon!) Choose Jon Marcella! Choose Jon! You need to be having words with the Governor!

Roisin C was on The Last Leg last night and they showed the clip with Damien I mentioned elsewhere!
She will be on Sunday Brunch tomorrow on Channel 4, so it is highly likely there will be another clip!

Roisin is killing it on Sunday Brunch, just generally throughout the show, but also in her GameFace interview segment, though she seems loads more relaxed afterwards (understandable). They showed that clip again with Damien! yay Apologies for not realising yesterday but the show was moved to More4 today - totally threw me!

GameFace is recommended in 2 places in The Times

The best tv, radio, streaming shows this week

gameface2times.jpg

It is also Critics Choice in The Sunday Times!

gameface2times2.jpg

(that costume! )

However, I must comment on this one

*rant warning*

Despite it being the critics choice, the critic then goes on to comment negatively on it feeling like an 'amalgam' of shows.

I would like to point out that the GameFace pilot came out before many of the shows mentioned, plus the counselling session in Fleabag series 2 comes well AFTER GAMEFACE SERIES 1. So who is imitating who?

FACT CHECKING PLEASE!

In truth, noone is imitating anyone else, every show mentioned is completely ORIGINAL different and individual from the other. Each brilliant in their own right. Sweeping statements like the ones in the Times are just so diminishing and quite frankly wrong

Also, as much as it is great to see GameFace and Roisin compared constantly to PWB and the increase in women writers in comedy, it is also getting really really annoying.

I wouldn't normally give space to sloppy press that hasn't even fact checked and puts things out into the world that are just plain incorrect, but needed to address this one!

Great Roisin interview in The Irish Times today!

She talks about GameFace (there are a couple of plot spoilers!)

and addresses the comparisons to PWB / Fleabag really really beautifully

Roisin Conaty: ‘I feel more Irish than British’

The writer/star of hit show GameFace is proud of her Irish roots. Just don’t call her Roy-sin

Shilpa Ganatra

Row-is-in. Roy-sin. Rosh-een. Roy-shin. Ros-in. You get the impression that Roisin Conaty has been introduced in all manner of ways in her lifetime, but that’s an occupational hazard if you’re a London-born panel show favourite, stand-up comedian, actor and scriptwriter with Irish parents.

“I still identify as Irish,” she says, pulling on a cigarette on a rooftop terrace in the Soho sun. “But I’m a Londoner too. It really is a great place to grow up. I grew up on a council estate and I met everyone from everywhere, and had food [from] all over the world before I was 10. It means I can travel the world and I don’t feel like it’s a strange place. There’s poverty and racism here, of course, which makes you wonder if it’s just nostalgia. But as a country, I feel more Irish than British.”

We talk about the woes of contemporary London, though she still manages to find a bright side. “At least everyone is engaged with politics now,” she says. “It’s not like in the ’90s in the credit rush era when you were happy spending money and like, ‘and who’s that MP?’”

She’s a keen listener, and before she smokes, she checks, then emphatically double checks, if I mind

Conaty was born in Camden 40 years ago to parents who met in London; her late father, who worked for Aer Lingus, was from Co Cavan, and her mother, a nurse, was from Co Limerick, where she was one of 12 sisters. Growing up with regular visits to Ireland, Conaty’s Irish side helped shaped her outlook.

“All my mother’s sisters are matriarchs – there are big characters and opinions. Watching them together is like a play, you have all these different takes on the world across different generations . . . My mum is hilarious. My dad was very, very funny too,” says Conaty, who won best newcomer at Edinburgh Festival in 2010 after being spurred on by her father’s sudden death. “I think I’ve got an Irish sensibility for language – I like how people talk. I’m not saying I’ve got it, but I’m obsessed with the way they use language, like they use a swear word very poetically.”

That’s certainly carried through, as shown in the second series of GameFace, the Channel 4 sitcom in which she writes and stars. In the first episode alone, there’s not one but two expertly-placed C-words. The night before we meet, at its premiere around the corner, director Andrew Chaplin explained that such profanity needs sign-off from a top dog at Channel 4 and is restricted in number. It’s affectionately known as “the c**t count”.

I meet Conaty days before it’s due to air, while she’s still editing the rest of the episodes, but her hectic schedule isn’t obvious from her cool demeanour. It takes no time to realise she’s an empathic soul. She’s a keen listener, for example, and before she smokes, she checks, then emphatically double checks, if I mind.

I ask if there’s any concern that GameFace has been scooped up in the whirlwind of female-fronted shows at the centre of pop culture – from Fleabag to Derry Girls. She answers with the kindest tone of negative.

“No, I think it holds its own,” she says nicely. “The shows you’re referring to are brilliant and there’s nothing that I don’t want to be linked to. I think it’s frustrating for all of us that we get compared to each other like a genre, without considering the detail. Not seeing differences is part of the problem. I suppose the reason behind it is the lack of female shows, and it’s the same with people of colour.

“There are so many more stories of women of different ages, and colours, and abilities, that we just haven’t seen. We’ve barely scratched the surface of a version of women on screen.”

It’s true that we’re still finding new aspects of female lives reflected back at us, and a notable case in point is the sight of a period leak in the second episode of the new series, which resulted in a few gasps in the screening room last night.

“I was so stunned at the reaction, especially as it was a comedy screening,” she says. “I presumed everyone had seen it at some point, on a sheet, or if they have sisters. Because it’s so common in our world. I guess there’ll be lots of Twitter trolls once it airs: ‘How dare you bleed!’ ” she laughs.

But GameFace (or “FaceTime, as my mother calls it”) isn’t just about shock value. Its beauty lies in the real-life predicaments of the hot mess that is Marcella, which swing from outrageously funny to weighty in a screentime second. The reception from the first series – it was E4’s biggest comedy launch since 2013 – was enough to get it shown in the US on Hulu and upgraded to Channel 4 for its second series.

Reprising their roles are Pauline McLynn as her mother and Damien Molony (of Being Human and Ripper Street) as the hot driving instructor. Her best friend and flatmate, Caroline Ginty, also appears as her best friend and flatmate, Caroline.

“We met at sixth form college. And we’re not a couple! That’s the thing. I’d love it if we were and I was gay,” she says, before reining it in lest her words be taken the wrong way.

Given that GameFace is partly about single life, I wonder if she’s still single herself?

“I’m not going to say,” she explains. “Only because if I say it, then I’d have to change it, so it’s one of those things I’ve decided I’m not going say, especially because then I start confessing lots of things.”

She recently returned from Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival, which gave her a chance to take a break from GameFace and reconnect with her comedian friends. “As soon as I got to the hotel I saw David O’Doherty, Nish Kumar and Ed Byrne hanging out playing frisbee over lunch. I was like, ‘My people!’ I missed my guys.”

You might also catch her on a panel show, particularly 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, and she’s due to reprise her role as the “sex worker” in a second series of After Life, Ricky Gervais’s poignant Netflix comedy about a recent widow adjusting to his new normal.

Most excitingly, there’s a US-UK film deal with Fox Searchlight in the works, though she’s keeping the specifics close to her chest, other than to explain that she’ll be concentrating on it for the rest of the year. How does writing a film compare with a sitcom?

“I find it easier, though let’s see how it comes out first,” Conaty replies. “With a sitcom, you have to have a beginning, middle and end six times, but with a film it’s just one story. Much of it is similar, though, with the characters, premise . . . and then holding your nerve when you think you can’t do it.”

The second series of GameFace begins Wednesday at 10pm on Channel 4

Another fab new Roisin interview!

I hope we get a GameFace Damien interview and the rest of the cast too!

I TALK TO Roisin Conaty | iTalkTelly

This part stands out for me, wonder why ?!

How fun is it to write the "Will they won't they?" between Marcella and John? [Jon]

It's really great. I love Damien so much. He's such a brilliant actor and in the first episode of the new series we see John [Jon] opening up. Even though he's still reluctant, Marcella makes him open up about his ex and after he spills his heart he's crushed by what happen sand we see him pulling back again - I'm really proud of that bit.

I really like the fact that Marcella and John [Jon] are actually quite similar in that they're both romantics who are scared of intimacy. They don't say what they mean, they're both quite co-dependent and scared of being on their own.

I love a good "Will they won't they?" and I love a good sweet love story that's not all about sex. It was always going to be this almost teenage relationship of dancing around each other in a very old-fashioned way.
