One more day until the penultimate episode of The Split series 2!
It's both exciting and sad, can't wait to see what happens next, but don't want it to end, this series has been so so good!
(Ok yes I have already binged on the iplayer, but you miss things... and luckily for me I can still invest heavily in the anticipation and indulgence of the weekly instalment!)
So... did everyone catch this episode of The Split last night?
I mean
Just a reminder this topic will contain spoilers, so people feel free to share thoughts on every aspect of the episode!
This episode felt like a turning point for Tyler - after scrutinizing everyone else for weeks, he is now the object of scrutiny - and his secrets have been revealed. Not only is he in major major debt, he also practised illegally for 2 years without a license.
In the scene where Zander revealed that he know this, it felt to me that Tyler was not sure which secret he was referring to.. so is there more?? As always with a Damien character it seems, this is not a black white situation. we also found out more about Tyler's past with addiction and he said working helped him get better.
What will happen between Zander and Tyler now? We found out both their parents are coming out, presumably for the wedding, so it is coming around quickly! I'm not sure if Zander can forgive Tyler for what he has done professionally or personally... also what struck me was how much denial Tyler must be in not to realise that Zander would find this out? Poor Zander... Tyler really pissed me off when he said "let me do the talking".. makes you wonder how manipulative he is in their relationship. But I also felt for him too....Makes you wonder just how much of a mess Tyler is in, how stable he really is, despite his appearances of professionalism and being under control, not just practically but emotionally... maybe it is because it is Damien in the role but I feel compassion for him despite and because of all we are finding out. And, I am having huge flashbacks to a certain Albert Flight (just me or anyone else getting that too?)
It was also a turning point for Tyler and Nina, continuing from the last episode where Nina told him she can't stop drinking and he told her about meetings and that he would be there, their dynamic together moved from being testy and confrontational to more of a friendship - and it was touching when Nina describes Tyler as a friend in the meeting. Annabel Scholey gave the performance of the episode when she spoke at the meeting, it was heartbreaking and I was in tears. Tyler saw himself in everything she was saying. For the first time we are seeing his vulnerable side. At last Nina is turning a corner, but she is fragile.. and as we begin to see so is Tyler. I feel for them both after this episode. I wonder what else there is to find out about Tyler and I really hope they both can stay on track with all things considered.
The Hannah / Nathan /Christie triangle continues to be heart wrenching, Hannah trying to get her marriage back together and then dropping the bombshell right at the very end.. Christie sleeping with Fi Hansen, lots of twists, shocks and surprises. Richie Hansen is a nasty piece of work, chilling personality type. I hope he gets everything he deserves.
I'm having to be really strong and not watch the next episode. What a cliffhanger!
I honestly can't see how Zander can forgive Tyler for the latest secret. Is Damien even in the last episode? Was that glimpse we had of him at AA the last we get to see if him? I'm also starting to wonder if he has any other secrets, and I keep thinking of his throw-away line to Nina at the photo booth - basically that he hated the way he was living. Does he just see Zander as a means to an end or does he actually care for him? I must say I don't get any chemistry between them.
Rose is starting to really annoy me and I'm finding her husband just as bad.
Hannah blaming everyone but herself for her problems is tiresome, she needs to accept that she chose to have an affair and to sleep with Christie on the eve of her wedding and not keep on trying to excuse it.
I hope Richie loses everything, he's a truly horrible person.
I'm loving Anna Chancellor in this. And Derry Girls granddad!
I would love there to be another series - even though I'm at odds with quite a few characters I'm loving the series. Unless there's a big turnaround though (I am definitely not watching the last episode early) I can't see Damien in it. I would have loved him to have a more central role.
The episode synopsis and cast list is up for the finale (episode 6) Ellie, if you want to find out if Damien is in it take a look here!
It didn't feel like the end of Tyler for me, more that we re just beginning to find out more about him. What this means for him and Zander though... and not just their relationship but his position at NHD...
I guess only finding out if there is more to come with Tyler in the finale can help us speculate on him in another series!
Did anyone else shout "nooooooo Hannah" at the end?!!
I agree with Ellie that I don't see any chemistry between Zander and Tyler. They barely even touch each other! I really do feel there's much more to come out about Tyler. He's clearly messed everything up big time in his past and his compassion towards Nina is really touching.
Nina talking at the AA meeting was so moving. So many excellent performances again.
Anna Chancellor's character is simultaneously hilarious and completely terrifying!
Richie taking the Stern children made me so angry. I'm going to be so angry if he gets away with everything. That sort of manipulation is so frightening. It's the insidious nature of it just makes you feel so anxious just watching it.
Had a quick look at Annabel Scholey's fan page (allaboutscholey)on Instagram (similar to ours). They seem to like Nina and Tyler, too - there's a lovely little video of them both.
Rosie, it was a jawdrop moment for sure, and what a cliffhanger to end on. Her timing was not perfect but when is the right time? They appeared to have sort of made up.. and then this... will Nathan ever be able to forgive her?
There was a little touch between Zander and Tyler in the previous episode (4) at Ruth's ceremony. To be fair they have mostly been seen in workplace setting, or been given the opportunity in the writing to get smooshy, but as we have all said before, there is not a lot of chemistry or vibe coming from them.
The big question hanging over the whole series is - does Tyler love Zander or is he marrying him for other reasons?
In this episode, it was clear, to me, that Zander is smitten with Tyler - already forgiving him for humungus debt and being so upset by the latest revelation.
In the scene between them where Zander reveals he knows about Tyler practising without a license Tyler's reaction was deliciously ambiguous - was he annoyed he found out because he loves him or because it could threaten their marriage, and he has other reasons for marrying him? Repeating myself, that line "let me do the talking" smacks of manipulation and maybe a one sided control / persuasion situation... but it is ambiguous which I love!
Tyler analysis, questions & what I got about him from this scene
How much are Tyler's present day motives and behaviour determined by his past?
How fragile is Tyler and his recovery?
Tyler sees himself in Nina and what she is going through
The connection between Tyler and Nina is getting stronger all the time
Tyler is more troubled than his outer professional appearance
Tyler is unhappy about Zander's discovery and being triggered - but we don't know if that is because he loves him and doesn't want to lose him, or for other reasons.
