Oh lovely this topic got bumped up!  I was just thinking yesterday about it as I listened to music.  Only problem, the music is reminding me of Hal in terms of my fanfic story and other's fanfic stories, so not really a connection to show Hal that everyone else might get!

But something that always reminds me of Hal is when someone says "Thank You".  I now always say "You're very welcome", and in my head I hear Hal's voice outside the pawn shop.  I wonder if that will ever stop? Probably not, I hear his voice all the time... LMAO

J-B those are cute salt & pepper shakers.  He worked in a cafe, he dressed up as French waiter, they are the right colours - I approve! wink

On the day that 'The Last Broadcast' aired, I visited Lacock Abbey where there happened to be an exhibition of photographs by Jo Whaley called 'The Theater of Insects'.  The pictures are melanchoic, sometimes disturbing, and strangely beautiful.  I bought the book....which then lay beside me that evening as I watched being human....and through many subsequent re-watches until it eventually got buried in a pile of homeless books.

I just uncovered it....one glimpse of the front cover and I was completely engulfed in a wave of Hal.

Apparently she became inspired when she discovered that the ancient Greek work for butterfly is 'psyche', which means soul....

If anyone is interested:

I came across this poem.  Instant Hal connection for me.

They say that Hope is happiness;
But genuine Love must prize the past,
And Memory wakes the thoughts that bless:
They rose the first--they set the last;

And all that Memory loves the most
Was once our only Hope to be,
And all that Hope adored and lost
Hath melted into Memory.

Alas it is delusion all:
The future cheats us from afar,
Nor can we be what we recall,
Nor dare we think on what we are.

George Gordon Byron

A box of matches will remind me of Hal for the rest of my life.  I'm pretty sure of it.

I've only just started watching Being Human (started with series 4) but every time I do the washing up I say "Sorry, marigolds" to myself while holding up my hands with the washing up gloves on and start giggling!

perfect little poem whimsy... that English pronunciation poem you posted on twitter a while back is also a great Hal reminder.

Still pretty much everything is reminding me of Hal.... but right now, with football fever hitting the world, the following line keeps echoing 'round my head:

"I don't really follow the rugby"

Oh yes, and marigolds. Good one.  I never called them that before BH.  I just called them kitchen gloves.  Now they're marigolds.

Spent the weekend watching Being Human series 5 for the first time. Spectacular. And felt instantly bereft as soon as it finished.

Now I've watched series 4 and 5 suddenly the whole of the forum makes sense: people's names, their signatures, lines from the show!!

Welcome to the world of the Halcoholic, Rosie... the end of BH series 5 the first time is such a powerful experience... don't forget there is an additional scene (on the DVD) you must watch to truly see the 'end' of the show.......... we have it on the forum too but I won't link you up to it as it really does need to be approached with care!

Gosh... you must have thought us all a bit bonkers before you could make sense of our names and sigs! domino

I watched the extra scene too - in the restaurant?

I didn't think you were all a bit bonkers, I thought I was missing out!

Have not been able to stop singing Putting on the Ritz all day! And saying 'hot' like Patsy!

Rosie - so pleased that you finally watched BH....stupidly pleased, in fact!  You'll have to go and take a look at some of those polls in DaMo Central now that you've met Hal....

I know this isn't particularly subtle - but this village is just a few miles from where I live and everytime I drive past the sign I smile to myself and sigh....

halmore.jpg

(apologies for the quallity of the pic....I actually took it off Google street view, as the sign itself is on a blind bend!)

Fifi, if I saw that sign I would think of Hal every time too.  I would think, yes more Hal please.

How have I missed this topic??

The lyrics to The Black Keys "Lonely Boy" reverberate through me where Hal is concerned but especially the song "Sinister Kid"

"A sinister kid is a kid who runs to meet his maker
A drop dead sprint from the day he's born
Straight into his maker's arms
And that's me, that's me
The boy with the broken halo
And that's me, that's me
The devil won't let me be"

halyes  is exactly what I think whenever I see that Halmore sign, whimsy!

Hmm....not sure if Leo would've really been a 'hair design' kinda guy - I think of him as more of a traditional barber.  I've always found it a bit surprising that he cut Hal's hair in the style that he did....although I'm not complaining!

I posted a note about this on the Yeats topic, but this is where it's more relevant.  This excerpt from Easter 1916 brings to mind for me Hal's recruitment and transformation into a vampire.  No doubt the association is aided by Damien reading it and by the fact that next Monday is the 500th year since Hal's recruitment at the Battle of Orsha.  His "vampire birthday", so to speak.

He, too, has resigned his part

In the casual comedy;

He, too, has been changed in his turn,

Transformed utterly:

A terrible beauty is born.

When Damien uttered those words: "A terrible beauty is born" on Poetry Please last Sunday I totally had the same Hal moment whimsy, amazing how just two words "terrible beauty" say everything. At the risk of being sacrilegious, the theme of resurrection in the poem also seem relevant.
