Damien’s upcoming film Tiger Raid is due this year and we’re excited to have an incredible first glimpse of his and co-star Brian Gleeson’s characters in the movie.
The production company Story Film released these exciting first images via their official website today and kindly allowed us to share.
Since the first mention of the film last year, we’ve also been gathering lots more juicy info on the upcoming project.
Here are 10 things we know about the film so far!
1. “Tiger Raid”
First up, the film has its official title: Tiger Raid. As the name suggests, the movie’s overall theme is based on a ‘Tiger Raid’ or ‘tiger kidnapping’, defined in Wikipedia as follows: “A tiger kidnapping or tiger robbery involves two separate crimes. The first crime usually involves an abduction of any person or thing someone highly values. Instead of demanding money, the captors demand that a second crime be committed on their behalf. The second crime could be anything from robbery, murder, to planting a bomb. A person or item held hostage is kept by the captors until their demands are met. The goal of the captors is to have their risky-dirty work performed by another person.”
2. “Pitch-black” thriller
The film is set in Iraq and based on the relationship between two Irish mercenaries as they undertake a kidnapping, discovering more about each other as they journey together across the desert.
Other sources describe the film as a thriller, a drama, but also hint at action elements and an adrenalising plot. As well as the movie having a dark tone, we can also expect a black comedy.
“TIGER RAID is a thriller; fast paced, tense, exciting and punchy..” Goldfinch Pictures
“Two rogue Black Ops for the US army..decide to take an oil Sheikh’s daughter hostage in Iraq.” Mayonews
“‘Tiger Raid’ could be compared to such black comedies as ‘In Bruges’ and ‘Seven Psychopaths’.” Mayonews
“..dark and unflinching Tiger Raid” Dean Valentine (soundtrack composer)
3. Top cast, character focussed
The lead cast alongside Damien (as Paddy) are fellow Irish actor Brian Gleeson (Snow White and the Huntsman, Love/Hate) who plays Joe and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Monsters: Dark Continent, Street Dance 2) who plays Shadha.
Early indications are that the main focus of the film is the relationship between the two lead characters, with the events of the kidnapping being told through their shifting dynamics as the story unfolds. Such close-up emphasis can only mean lots of screen time for our favourite actor.
Now we have had our first pulse quickening peek at Damien and Brian Gleeson’s characters as Paddy and Joe, we can’t go any further without comment on their look for the film.
During the shoot in August last year, Damien dropped the first hint about the film in a tweet, commenting on spending all day in the make-up chair – the new images finally reveal why.
The visual impact of the characters’ bandit-like blacked-out eyes is immediate – mysterious, intense, menacing, scary even, intriguing. Perhaps also symbolic of the suggested slice of darkness within both of these men.
Although set in Iraq, Tiger Raid was filmed in the scorching temperatures of Jordan. According to director of cinematography Si Bell, specialist cameras had to be used to cope with the heat.
Mick Donnellan, who was on set through the shoot, commented on the actors’ dedication even in the immense heat: “Speaking about the actors, Mick said they were all ‘really invested in it’ and that even in 50 degree heat in army costumes, they didn’t complain.”
In contrast to the up close focus of the film on the two lead characters, The epic, vast, barren and scorched desert landscape provides a stunning backdrop for their journey, and from what we know of Tiger Raid so far, will add to the tone and flavour of the film. In combination with the striking make-up of the characters, the film is set to be visually stunning.
A thriller with a story, the film is also going to have its fair share of action. Damien and Brian Gleeson’s characters are special ops with a military background and both actors received specialist training for their roles.
Jordan based MissionX, specialist military consultants to the film and TV industry (who have worked on a number of high-profile action / drama films including Rosewater andMonsters: Dark Continent) gave them training during filming to help bring authenticity to their characters.
The two actors also trained with Jordan pro boxing champion Arifa Bseiso.

8. International appeal
The film has as strong Irish foundation from concept, to creation and cast, but has an international feel in terms of location, plot and storyline, and Tiger Raid is well set to engage a world-wide audience.
According to Story Film, Tiger Raid will premiere at a film festival summer 2015.
We cannot wait to see Damien on the big screen and eagerly await Tiger Raid. Watch this space for more news as it happens!
Huge thanks to Story Film for the kind permission to share the images.
Tiger Raid is directed by Simon Dixon, written by Simon Dixon, Gareth Coulam Evans and Mick Donellan, produced by Story Films and Samson Films, co-financed by The irish Film Board and Ingenious and international sales are handled by Bankside Films.

Excellent article, domino! It's amazing just how much info you've managed to find about this film....and everything we know about it so far just adds to my general excitement!
It does look very dark, and 'gritty'...and a little bit brooding - but I'm optimistic that there will be some humour in there too - “‘Tiger Raid’ could be compared to such black comedies as ‘In Bruges’ and ‘Seven Psychopaths’.” Mayonews"
Mick Donnellan has commented a number of times that humour is important in his writing (though he does seem to have quite a dark sense of humour)....and the images from 'Radio Luxumburg look pretty dark, but that's described as a comedy. Without a bit of humour thrillers can be a bit unrelenting...but I'm starting to see this more as a thriller with some elements of black comedy, rather than a black comedy in itself (if that makes sense?)
“TIGER RAID is a thriller; fast paced, tense, exciting and punchy..” Goldfinch Pictures
Added to everything else the fact that it seems to be very character focussed just makes it perfect for Damien (or Damien is perfect for this film....not sure which way round that should go!) I feel like I couldn't ask for more really!
I am becoming insensibly excited and impatient for this film....really can't wait to see it - those pics are just amazing - and I hope that we get lots more goodies to tide us over until we finally get to see it!
Everything you said fifi! those pics sort of launched the urge to see this film right away!
And good article domino, nice to see everything we know summed up in one topic! I really like the part that tells how the movie is going to be as global as possible and shown worldwide. As long distance fan, this gives me hope that I will see it here!
I'm glad you both enjoyed it fifi and Jozie, thanks for the feedback.
I'm quite proud of (Tiger) 'Raiders of the Black Mask'.
The make-up / look of the two lead characters are revealing of the film's tone - a bit like a clown's make-up, the feel (for me) is that unusual and compelling mix of somehow menacing, even macabre, certainly dark, alongside a tiny bit humorous, a sliver of funny... They are not disguised per se, so the act of doing it is not necessary? and the act itself is dark, but funny... there is something heavy and serious about it but also somehow dressing up and playful (that is not the right word... I'm not ridiculing it..) but there is all that and more in just one look at their appearance for me.
Overall, it couldn't be more magnetic and compelling.
So, yes fifi, that is how it is feeling to me too.. a thriller with odd notes of humour. It does sound multi tonal really....and both impactful and subtle. all credit to the brilliant story from what we know so far.
The film has that scope to be internationally received Jozie, truly hoping it goes global!
And about the makeup, people at desert use black in their eyes (kohl) preventing sun to burn the area around the eye, but I think it's cool they are making it bit more "clown like" like you said domino. Makes them look criminals to me, like they are using this advantage to hide their identities. Mysterious look.
Phenomenal write-up for what's gearing up to be a phenomenal film! Well done domino, and the recognition by Mick Donnellan is just fantastic. I like his reply on the comments section of his blog post:
"the forum will be fillin out Cinemas all over the world by the looksa things!"
He's not wrong about that!
And once again, THOSE PICTURES!!!!! Damien's effortless intensity has taken my breath away, almost literally. The first time I saw them, I was hyperventilating and broke out in a cold sweat. Still ties my tummy in knots when I look at them.
Agree with the comments about humor, it seems to be integral to Mick's writing style, albeit a dark humor. Definitely my cup of tea, and to be honest, something I've seen rising in popularity in TV and Film more and more. While I'm sure some of the details of the characters have been tweaked, possibly to correlate with the new setting and perhaps to mainstream it a bit, I don't see that they wouldn't have transferred that component from the play to the film.
“As Joe and Paddy reveal more about themselves to each other, their intimidating, scary clown makeup gradually diminishes, representing their vulnerabilities coming out into the open."
Anyone else notice that beyond the raccoon eyes, the dirty smudges on their faces is not just dirt, but wiped-off black face paint?

To be honest, whimsy, no I hadn't. Hadn't really got round to any coherent thought processes.....but now you come to mention it - yes! it does look like black face paint.....well spotted and good thinking!
Oh yes, well spotted whimsy! It makes you wonder what stage in the film this, image is from.. and whether the bandit mask is what remains of a fully masked face! Thought those scarves are definitely going to be over their mouths at some point!
Tiger Raid will premiere at a film festival in the summer...exciting!
So the 'early 2015' delivery date mentioned in the Irish Film Board catalogue may not have been referring to release date.. which clearly is now going to be after the summer!
