Damien has been cast as Edmund in 'King Lear' in a Chichester Festival Theatre Production from 22 September - 28 October 2017, directed by Jonathan Munby.
He will work alongside Sir Ian McKellen (and Jonathan Bailey) once more!
Hooray! It looked like DaMo and Sir Ian had a really good relationship on No Man's Land so it's fabulous they'll be working together on this. I wonder if it will be broadcast to cinema? Have Chichester Theatre done that in the past?

More info: it will be a 'modern dress production' and 'contemporary piece' because "It absolutely mirrors the times we are living in" "Think about the division of a kingdom...We're living through that as we negotiate Brexit." Director Jonathan Munby (source)
Sinead Cusack will play Kent, loyal courtier to King Lear (Ian McKellen). The King's daughters Goneril, Regan and Cordelia will be played by Dirvla Kirwan, Kirsty Bushell and Tamara Lawrence. Gloucester will be played by Danny Webb, with Phil Daniels as The Fool, Patrick Robinson as Cornwall, Dominic Mafham as Albany and Caleb Roberts as the King Of France. Damien and Jonathan Bailey will appear as the 'brothers-at-war' Edmund and Edgar.
Apparently Munby wants to do a live cinema broadcast "or failing that, shoot it for video or online".

Well hooray for that since it's the only way most of us might get to see it! Sinead Cusack as Kent is a really interesting choice, I think she'll be great.
papillon... pamplemousse... bibliothèque... un baiser A lilt in his voice. Every sentence like music... #kisskisskiss A terrible beauty is born. Love me some #Jacksass
I feel very lucky that I already booked to see this back in March! Given the cast, I'd be surprised if it doesn't transfer to London after it is finished in Chichester: if well received, things tend to, so here's hoping for everyone. :)
There is understandable frustration amongst us Damo fans that the production is already sold out, but it is also understandable that the tickets were snapped up months ago with the announcement if the play and Sir Ian McKellen's casting.
HOWEVER... keep watching the official page, because the theatre have confirmed more tickets and returns will be released a month before opening! These will get snapped up very, very quickly so be super vigilant everyone!
Additionally, as littleimpulse commented, perhaps there may be an extension or transfer, but this has not been mentioned or confirmed.
Shakespeare’s KING LEAR will run at the Minerva Theatre from 22 September – 28 October, directed by Jonathan Munby. The ensemble of actors includes Ian McKellen in the title role, with Jonathan Bailey (Edgar), Kirsty Bushell (Regan), Richard Clews (Old Man/Gentleman Informer), Sinéad Cusack (Kent), Phil Daniels (Fool), John Hastings (Curan/Doctor), Dervla Kirwan (Goneril), Tamara Lawrance (Cordelia), Dominic Mafham (Albany), Jake Mann (Burgundy), Michael Matus (Oswald), Damien Molony (Edmund), Caleb Roberts (King of France), Patrick Robinson (Cornwall) and Danny Webb (Gloucester).
The production is sold out but do check the website for returns. We are currently exploring the possibility of a broadcast to enable more people to see it.

NT Live seem to be sharing their expertise in this regard, I think quite a few recent NT Live broadcasts have not been National Theatre productions and have been bringing different theatres into the fold (Hangmen at the Royal Court and Who's Afraid of Virgina Woolf at the Harold Pinter Theatre are the most recent I can think of). Fingers crossed something like that will get this production a showing!
Yes indeed Maghat, including No Man's Land of course, not a NT production but broadcast via NTLive - which Sir Ian and DaMo were also both in.
I am also crossing fingers for the "or failing that, shoot it for video or online" as expressed by the director Jonathan Munby

The Manchester Royal Exchange Hamlet (the one with Maxine Peake) did a sort of hybrid of the two - they shot two performances on consecutive evenings, edited them into a single performance and then broadcast that as if live. If the director is keen on finding a solution then I'm guessing we can be cautiously optimistic about it happening *fingers crossed*
Yeah, keep a sharp eye folks. As I say, I booked back in March and even then there were only a couple of seats left (I'm not sure whether I even got the last seat for the show I booked?!) and most performances were already sold out. So if it is any consolation it is not like you only just missed out on tickets.
Fantastic news that they'll release more seats though. Fingers crossed for you all! As long as you keep an eye on the website, I'm sure you can get some. :) I feel bad that I have a ticket... although... I also feel great that I have a ticket!
Would be fabulous if they record it too (though I suppose if they record it it may mean a transfer were less likely? Or else more people would see it anyway?? I dunno... Here's hoping for at least one anyway, if not both!)
Sometimes there are films and plays on Sky Arts which stay on catch up for ages. I have a Now TV box and can watch lots of different things on it. I saw The Tempest which starred Roger Allam as Prospero, Jessie Buckley as Miranda and Colin Morgan as Ariel.
WOHOOOO! Exciting news but sorry to hear all the tickets are sold, maybe I'll try to get one but really hoping this will be recorded for bigger audience! :)
This is such exciting news!!! I've always said that Edmund is one of the parts I wish I could've seen Damo play....and to get to take that role again with Ian McKellan as Lear - wow!! (Would've been quite nice to see Jonathan Bailey on stage with him too - although the 'modern dress' may be a slight disappointment - I am quite fond of those Shakespeare in Styria photos ) Gutted that I haven't got a ticket obviously - but I'm totally thrilled for him that this is happening!
Ian McKellan is quite keen to bring theatre to as wide an audience as possible, and seemed fairly on board with the concept of NTlive, so I'm reasonably optimistic that I'll at least get to see it at the cinema.
Very excited for Damien in the role of Edmund, it is a substantial part in this classic play and possibly the most interesting character. A villain, with tragic elements and not just one dimensional. It would be a real shame for his performance in the role (and the whole production of course) not to reach the wider audience!
After contacting the theatre directly, they have confirmed they are definitely looking into the broadcast to enable more people to see it, and are also recommending keeping an eye on the website for returns. The broadcast seems like a no-brainer, and is guaranteed to also be a sell out, both here and internationally! Let's keep everything crossed !
Perhaps we shouldn't give up hope of a possible transfer either, though there has been no official mention of this. Showing my ignorance here but only just read that there was a tv broadcast of Gypsy in 2015, which transferred from CFT to the West End, now available on DVD......
fifi, I know what you mean about the costume, but the Shakespeare in Styria looked to be in modern dress in part too.. I'm also delighted at the thought of a female 'Kent'!
Wonder if rehearsals have begun? Damien has the advantage of playing the role before, bound to be an advantage in terms of line learning, but I am sure he will have fun bringing Jonathan Munby's vision of Edmund to life!
I would imagine that rehearsals would be starting about now. Hope there'll be something pics.
I wonder how hard it is not to be influenced by how you've already performed a role? If anyone can bring something new and exciting to a role, it's Damien.
Domino - doh!! Of course I knew the shakespeare in styria was also in modern dress! For some reason that pic in the uniform with the sword always makes me feel a bit muddled...... lets hope that this new production leads to some similarly 'nice' pictures
I agree about the character of Edmund - it's not just the pics which make me wish I'd seen the previous production.....Edmund is definitely a 3 dimentional character and I can imagine Damien properly doing the part justice.
The chance of returns seems pretty slim (Sir Ian McKellan!), and I'm not close enough for on the day ticket releases.....but I'm certainly not giving up hope on a transfer - or even just the run at Chichester being extended
Rosie - I know what you mean about being influenced by how he performed the part previously, but I somehow imagine that everything about this production will feel so different.... And after hearing how they approached No Mans Land - where is seems they consciously tried to play it differently every night - I agree that he will absolutely bring something new and exciting to the role.
Now seems about right Rosie! and yes, fingers crossed for some production photos soon!
fifi, much as I hate to agree you are probably right about returns. tickets were limited to 2 per person as well so it is unlikely anyone over bought and will return for that reason But it does beg the possibility of an extension and let's not forget the broadcast idea!
Edmund is a complex character and those villainous / tragic aspects are a thriling prospect from our fave actor.
Every director has a different vision, and despite the 'script' having to be the same (can't really mess with Shakespeare or it ain't Shakespeare) the interpretation can profoundly effect the play. Also Damien has developed and matured as an actor, can't help but wonder about the even more depth he will be bringing to the role...
