New Radio Roles For Damien in 2013? | 'Student Stories' and 'Hill Bachelors' BBC Radio 4
Permalink

Could we be adding a new section for 'Radio' on Damien's acting credits soon?

A few of us noticed the following entry on his Spotlight profile yesterday:

"Radio, Brendan, BBC STUDENT STORIES, BBC Radio 4, Heather Larmour"

The BBC Media Centre entry for Student Stories indicates the show airs 4 January 2013 and runs for 3 episodes

Damien's involvement has not been officially announced, so at this stage we are being tentatively speculative. But can we just say with a voice like his, Damien Molony was made for radio.

Thank you to Spotlight where this info was sourced.

sweet! will have to come back here to see if confirmed & where i can listen online.....you're now my Damo News Outlet. i wonder which accent he'll use. i hope his Irish brogue....i'm American and we have no accents around here so I swoon over that one. his English one is swoon worthy too, but hearing him talk naturally is to die for! thudalert

Laura : "So Damien really will be Mr Radio 4" YES!! haha!

Would it be safe to assume Damien will be performing in his native accent for this one? I did a little research on the writer, Gerald Murphy, he is an award winning Irish author and playwright. His field of work includes theatre, television and radio and his playwriting career was successfully launched by The Welcome when it was staged by the Druid Theatre Company in 2001. He received a PJ O’Connor award for His first radio play Stranger In The Night.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that this would have to be an irish accent: all in all it's a bit of a trinity college fest. Which suits me fine! I LOVE Hal's voice, but genuinely want to hear more of that beautiful Irish lilt.

It's such a shame that the radio leeds interview isn't available anymore...I listened to it a few times but would never tire of it (I also loved the fact that you could almost hear the interviewer swooning!)  So I'm determined to make sure that I don't let this one get away....I have no idea how to achieve this, but I've got a month to figure it out!

It is looking that way as the evidence presents itself Lau! although it is onyl a small piece, and if it is 3 'student stories' then Damien may only be on one episode of the three, but oh.... 15 minutes of Damien voice acting? after our glimpse of that with Word Theatre I am very excited indeed!

One of the main reasons I am a fan of Damien's acting is his nuanced delivery, each Hal line he uttered in Being Human series 4 was so richly textured, it is not just the voice it is the talent and interpretation behind it, the shading... *has a fangirl moment*

Oh the irony! Trinity College are probably kicking themselves more than ever that they turned our talented actor down for a place and beginning to see that he was entirely correct in his assessment of the most important cultural moment of 2002 (for those who have no idea what I am on about, check out this epic interview!)

Agree fifi it seems most likely, that is if the characters /students themselves are written as native Irish, the college itself is culturally diverse as is the student population so who knows!

Damien posted a very cure picture on twitter today that some talented young artist had drawn for him..are my eyes deceiving me or is that a microphone?

Delightful picture! I wonder who Damien's fellow boy actor is? There is now a danger that I'm going to start calling him 'Damien Molony, Boy Actor'.

New Radio Roles For Damien in 2013? | 'Student Stories' and 'Hill Bachelors' BBC Radio 4
Permalink

** UPDATE! **

Delightful news, 'New radio role for Damien' has changed to radio roles, plural - Damien's Spotlight profile now also shows the following:

2012RadioPaulieHILL BACHELORSBBC Radio 4Gemma McMullan

Gemma McMullen is a BBC producer based in Belfast, and there are recording studios there so this may explain Damien's tweet from Monday about working there - and they must be microphones in the picture!

So... we will be seeing lots of Damien's seriously handsome face on our tv screens next year, and hearing his seriously handsome voice on our radios!

The Hill Bachelors is is a collection of stories /sketches written by William Trevor, another Trinity College Dublin Alumni. Damien's character 'Paulie' is the protagonist in the title story.

Synopsis via Amazon >> http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hill-Bachelors-William-Trevor/dp/0140294694

thanks to Su for the heads up!

here's a little more info from http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/599553.The_Hill_Bachelors

The eponymous final story of the collection is the most heartrending. Simply put, the youngest son of a medium-sized family inherits the farm of an uncaring father, at first merely because he alone of the siblings has no other demands and can take care of their mother in the place she's lived for decades. But finally Paulie—like the monk Michael in the earlier story—chooses to follow a calling, the calling of the land. Like the monk, he is destined for a life of poverty and celibacy, and though he knows the fate that his choice has determined, he accepts it as his choice.

'When her own death came, he other children would return, again all at the same time. The coffin would be carried down the steep stairs, out into the van in the yard, and the funeral would go through the streets of Drunbeg, and the next day there’d be the Mass. They’d go away then, leaving Paulie in the farmhouse…Guilt was misplaced, goodness hardly came into it. Her widowing and the mood of a capricious time were not of consequence, no more than a flicker in the scheme of things that had always been there. Enduring, unchanging, the hills had waited for him, claiming one of their own.'

Before I had children I used to listen to Radio 4 loads, but got out of the habit cos I couldn't concentrate on them and the radio at the same time (it's that multitasking thing again!) and got fed up with missing the end of things.

This has actually got me listening again. And I realise how much I've missed it!

Thank you for the extra info on The Hill Bachelors whimsy. I guess we ought add a spoiler alert in case peeps want to come to the story purely. Also I have been unable to find any official info on this radio play/drama as yet so we do not know exactly what kind of adaptation it will be or if it will definitely be at all..but fingers crossed!

It will be available on the Radio section of the BBCiplayer live and afterwards and may be available as a podcast afterwards, which I think I am right in saying (unlike the television iplayer programmes) ARE internationally available depending on the content and rights agreement. http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/help/outside_the_uk/radio_world

I have just emailed BBC Radio 4 to confirm Damien is cast as Brendan in Student Stories, everything points in that direction but until we have had official confirmation, it feels best to keep it low key and not broadcast on twitter further..yet!

Carrel 16 - Fifth Floor - Ussher Library
By Gerald Murphy

It's the day of the Trinity College Ball in Dublin and Brendan has a plan. He'll spend the day studying for his Economics and Business exams in the library and then crash the ball in the evening to meet up with Helen, the girl he's trying to impress. But when his revision doesn't go quite as planned and he gets locked in, Brendan discovers an escape route out of more than just the library.

I am delighted to say that we will indeed be hearing Damien's dulcet tones on the radio next Friday, he is definitely playing Brendan in episode 1 of Student Stories on BBC Radio 4.

I received a very nice and friendly email from Heather Larmour, Radio Drama Producer, BBC NI confirming.

So be sure to tune in ..it is only a week away!
